if your up for sun, surf, theme parks, clubs, restaurants: then go to the Gold Coast. (you can even stay in Broadbeach, its the same thing) its exciting and alive.
if your up for just relaxing, sun, reading, walking, go even further north to palm cove. quieter. really pretty and you will be able to go snorkeling in the great barrier reef from there. (do not go to port douglas - boring)
if shopping, city, sheek restaurants/cafe's, theatre is your thing, then go to sydney or melbourne. (make it Melbourne, they are friendlier and transport is wayyyyyy easier)
if you want cheap accom and havent booked yet, go to wotif.com and there will be cheap last minute accommodation for all kinds of hotels. you will save money here on accom.
or, like the previous person said, book a week long tour where for around 1000 you will get accom and transport and entry into places all taken care of. try intrepid.com for an adventure tour. or google 'adventure tours' or 'aust. tours'.
have fun in australia!!

The goldCoast for sure. You will have a week of fun, also you can cover some of Brisbane during that time. You have the best beaches and surf golden sands. Theme parks ie MovieWorld, Sea world. Wet'n'wild .Dream World . Wild life parks. Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast North of Brisbane. Whale watching from June to November. Islands to visit. The Hinterland for treking through the national parks. Plenty of great shopping and Competitive Accomadation . Some good deals here. Oh so much and more

1500 won't get you very far on the gold coast. Why not try a organised bus trip and go and see the outback. I'm sure bus companies have deals where they supply your meals and stop overs for a few days at a certain cost.

I wouldn't go near the Gold Coast, I loathe the place. For a week, try Sydney and its surrounds or spend a relaxing week in Cairns taking in the barrier reef, the rainforest and the tablelands.
