Because they've been indoctrinated with the "witches are evil and worship Satan" type of thing. Much fear is based in lack of knowledge, and many just follow teaching without investigating.

Before I get 20 thumbs down this is not my belief.
People are afraid of witches because they are afraid that witches worship the Devil, they see witches as the dark forces. They are afraid of what they do not understand.

Because of the bad image created and perpetuated by the church and Hollywood. People think witches and wizards are evil and that they have been consorting with the devil when if fact there is not devil in witchcraft as far as I know. The concept of devil is something Christians invented.
Besides, people are always afraid of what they don't know, what they can't control or what they feel to be different and generally want to destroy it.

I think either someone told them to be afraid or they've seen the wrong movies, TV shows or read the wrong books. They may also be confusing them with Satanists or cults that have nothing to do with Wiccans.
Most of the Wiccans I've known were good people and some are friends. I have never known them to push their beliefs on others or do anything I would consider "evil".

People are consistently afraid of the unknown. They know nothing about what witches actually do, all they have to go by is what their religious beliefs and society has told them, which is far from the truth.

I think people are afraid of witches b/c of what they have been taught and their lack of knowledge on the subject. I also believe that the catholic church is partly to blame from years and years ago. Since most christian religions originated from wiccian and pegan's religion I think the catholic church didn't want people to know this so they put "fear" in people so they wouldn't believe what this religions were saying. ...And ya I know that anyone on here who is christian is going to thumb's down this b/c they still don't believe that that is true and it doesn't bother me b/c I will believe what I want to believe.

As has been said by almost everyone wo has answered "fear of the unknown" People are afraid of what they don't understand, bu sadly they are not willing to try to find out because their Bible say if they even look into it at all they are going to Hell. Now that iw what I call a loving God!

They've been exposed to a lot of propaganda to the effect that witches are under the control of Satan. They also probably believe that if they did not have the church to keep them in line, they would do all sorts of naughty things. So they assume you do all sorts of naughty things. And since they consider an awful lot of things naughty . . .

the same reason some people are afraid of the dark...it's unknown.

they listen to what has been said might be there instead of turning the light on (doing a little research) to find out.

some of my favorite people are witches...

bright blessings to you

Silly Rabbit! you know why. Because they are taught to be afraid of what they do not know! And because they are ignorant about what "witches" really believe and practice. Moreover their fear and prejudice keeps them in ignorance. People are pretty brainwashed ya know.
