she was found on the street so we took her in and she is currently lactating. does anyone know if this means she's already had her kittens and they are outside somewhere or has she not had them yet?

easiest thing to do, grab a glass jar, put the open end on her stomach and the other end on your ear and listen for the kittens inside her. Try several glass jars.

1Check to see if her nipples are larger. Around day 21, a pregnant female's nipples will often turn bright pink. If they are, she is pregnant. If not, wait another week, and check again. Some may not turn bright pink or become enlarged, but most will. Ads by Google 2Very gently run your hand over the surface of her tummy to see if you feel a sort of swelling like huge balls the size of walnuts. Do not put too much pressure on the lumps, the lumps are kitten heads. 3When a cat becomes pregnant, her personality may change. Pregnant cats become very affectionate, and not all teeth and claws. 4Stand back and look at your cat's overall shape. From the side, pregnant cats frequently look a little swayback with a slightly distended tummy. From the top looking down at the cat, a pregnant cat's tummy is frequently distended slightly more than halfway from the neck to the tail. This look has been compared to the posture of a burro. If your cat's profile has changed from normal to burro, she might be pregnant. 5To distinguish pregnant from fat: fat cats are fat all over, including the neck, the legs. etc. Pregnant cats are not. However, keep in mind that fat cats can be pregnant too!6When a pregnant cat gets close to delivering her kittens, she may start nesting; arranging blankets, towels, straw, whatever, into a secure place to have her kittens

If she is lactating and you can't feel any kittens and there is no bulge then she has had the kittens and you need to let her get back to them before it is too late. Let her out and follow her or put her on a harness and let her lead you to the kittens. Bring a crate with you so that you can put mom and the kittens inside and bring them home. Then a vet check would be in order to make sure everyone is okay.

I hope you find the kittens in time! Good luck!

1. If her tummy is bloated she is pregnant. If her tummy is soft and her breasts are sagging she had babies.
2. If she is about to have babies, she will try to find a place to nest. If she had the babies, she may want to go back to them. So let her go to them if she looks like she wants to get out.
3. Be careful, if the babies are out there they will die if left alone. Go have a look around in teh neighbourhood, checking for crying kittens hidden somewhere. Meow near possible nests to see if they answer. And the best would be to have a vet look at the cat to be sure what is going on, because another option is that the babies may be dead in her and she may die if not treated. So if you are going to interfere and save the cat, which is a good thing, do it right!

You can usually tell if her belly is fat and slightly firm she's still pregnant and if it's saggy then she has just delivered and it would be best if you let her out because she would know where her kittens are. Then again, she may have abandoned them and then you should try looking around for signs of kittens. You should follow any signs of bleeding or the smell of placenta. When you find them you should either take them home and find them homes of give them to your local animal shelter.

Well God forbid you should do the right thing, the responsible, thing, and take her to THE VET!! If you are taking on the responsibility for this cat, then it is YOUR duty to get her proper care. Since she is a stray, you can be fairly certain that she has not had any prenatal care or any other kind. Do her that kindness. She needs to be seen. And don't procrastinate.

well, if she looks pregnant then what you can do is feel around her stomich and see if you feel what feels like kittens. or watch her and if she starts making a nest sort of thing then you will know. other wise you really need to take her in to the vet any ways, she could have a disease! plus that is the only true way you will know!

if she is still in kitten you will be able to feel kittens moving inside, have a feel of her tummy. if she has had kittens she will be quite thin as it takes it out of them once they have given birth, if she trys to get out you need to let her out to feed her kittens, but try to follow her so her babys can be rescued also :)

she probably already had them and depending on when you found her the chances are the babies are gone by now...usually cats dont lactate until after the birth

If you're planning on keeping her as a pet, take her to the vet and have her examined.
