Prophets within all religions seem to be just taken at their word, this I, and most rational people, find hard to understand. if someone came out today and claimed to be a Prophet of God, that he had the answers to salvation and the key to heaven through his visions of God; wouldn't you instantly condemn this person as a nutter!? everyone would want to see proof, evidence, facts, anything that would substantiate his claims? Modern society trusts nothing without facts and
the only evidence you have is the trust and faith that you put into your religious texts; but how credible are they? and how do you think they hold up to the modern day beliefs?

isn't it just a case of faith and trust, that what these Prophets say is truth?

Ctholic crusader; if the people had knowledge of the prophesy, wouldn't it be logical to think that someone could have pretended to be that prophet to gain power over his fellow man? plus this is substantiated by the actions of the jewish people toward the word of Jesus, thye did not believe him because he did not prove himself a prophet.

the men who wrote the bible had the advantage of hind sight!! they could have inseted anything to back up their claims, this is apparent throughout the NT, with referrences to jesus' passion.

Steve: don't quote the bible to explain this, it was written by men way after the supposed crucifiction and by men that had already been indoctrinated by the vision of Paul. How would you substantiate the claims of the prophet within your mind and conscience?

It's completely an issue of faith and trust, whether you're talking about the "prophets" of today or the "prophets" of 2500 years ago. Why do people believe in the Biblical prophecies and their supposed fulfillment in Jesus? Because the Bible says so. But think about it - how hard would it have been for the authors of the gospels to insert incidents in the narrative in which Jesus acts so as to "fulfill" this or that prophecy? How hard would it have been for Jesus himself to deliberately fulfill them? Find a donkey, ride it into town. Bam - there's Zechariah 9:9. I don't even think it's unorthodox to say that Jesus intentionally fulfilled the prophets; but if you're not already a believer, there's no reason to be impressed by it. You or I could do the same thing today.

As for the prophecies themselves, they're exactly akin to the oracles of the Greeks: they're resonant, obscure, suggestive statements that might apply to any number of historical situations, or none. There's usually no way to objectively substantiate them. The meaning is almost entirely subjective, like the interpretation of an ink blot.

The two principles declared in the Law of Moses concerning evaluating prophets.

1. Do they have the affirmation of miracles
De 18:22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.

2. Is what they say consistent with what God has already said.
Deut 13:1-3 "If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

The false Islamic prophet Mohammed fails on both of these counts.

Jesus did miracles but was accused of contradicting what God already said. But the Jews hadn't really understood what God had already said.

If someone said he was a prophet then I would look at what they prophesied. I would use scripture to see if it basically measured up to it. And if it didn't fulfil accurately or there were changes from said prophet (fiddling about to make it fit) I WOULD REJECT IT.

I don't think there will be any more real prophets because we are I believe in a different dispensation.
