There use to be a law that only one shopping trip in a 48 hour period was allowed Canadians shopping in the United States. Is that still true?

No. Those rules were changed. I remember it use to also include that you could only have one 7 day exemption per year, no longer the case, the exemptions are available for anytime you are absent from the country.

As far as I know there was never a law that you could only shop while in the US if you stayed for 48 hours. That related only to duty free shopping, you can cross the border and shop as much as you want as long as you are willing to pay the duty. It used to be that you were allowed one 48 hour duty free shopping allowance every quarter (3 months) and a 7 day duty free shopping allowance once a year. Those have been changed and the restrictions on the number of duty free shopping times are no longer in effect. Presently you could go over 48 hours every week, or more, and bring back your allowance for that time period.

At present if you stay any 24 hour period the duty free allowance is $50, 48 hours the duty free allowance is $400 and if you stay 7 days (not counting the day you leave but counting the day you return so it actually has to be 7 nights) it is $750. Tobacco and alcohol purchases are included in the duty free allowance for 48 hours or greater only and the amounts that can be brought in without duty are limited, anything over that is subject to duty. There are reports that the government is looking into increasing the duty free limit to $2,000 but I have not heard what time period that would apply to. Of course anything you buy and consume while in the US does not count, only what you buy and bring back to Canada.

I shop across the boarder several times a week. It all depends on what you want to buy. Anyting made in Canada the US and Mexico can be brought through the border and you will have to pay the gst and pst on it if you have not been in the US for 48 hours. Grocerys you are able to bring across as long as they are approved foods. Some items are limited or banned such as some dog food. You are best to call your closest border crossing.
