Take her to your vet - it may be a U.T.I (urinary tract infection). She will probably need a course of tablets.

Is she trying to poop or pee? If it's poop, she could be constipated.

If it's pee, that's a real danger sign that nothing is coming out. There's a blockage in the urinary tube and the longer it's there the more the lining in the bladder breaks down (bleeding) and the kidneys stop functioning. She'll be straining to get something out, but only a drop or two comes.

This is a vet emergency. Waiting 24-48 hours can kill a cat with this problem, because once the kidneys shut down you're looking at blood poisoning and shock.

Your cat may feel a sense of safety and security in her litter box. My cats did the exact same thing when we moved to a larger house. They were not used to the surroundings, and one of the few things familiar to them were their boxes.

You will need to take the cat to a vet. Could be, and quite likely is a kidney infection.

Probably cystitis. not an emergency if she's female but you need to take her to your vet tomorrow. Male cats this is a genuine, life threatening emergency and needs to be seen asap.
