That all depends on what type of guitarist is using the instrument, and what kind of music he's playing.
Comparing Fenders and Gibsons is like comparing apples and oranges, they are totally different animals in my opinion.

Since the days of early rock and roll the Gibson Les Paul, and Les Paul SG and the Fender Stratocaster have been the favorite of guitarists worldwide. In my opinion Gibson's are waaaay over priced. It's amazing how much money you have to pay for a name. I have 9 guitars, a 1988 Les Paul Black Beauty, and a 2006 Fender Power Strat being the most expensive of them. The LP is too heavy to carry around on stage for any length of time. The Strat is lighter, has a more powerful sound, and to me is just a nicer looking, easier to play axe. You didn't ask but I like my Ibanez Artcore better than either of the two.

There both very good guitars....it's up to the player to decide which is better, some may like the Gibson sound and others may like the Fender better...I think it depends on the individual everyone likes a certain sound....You may at one time play a Gibson and love it and then go somewhere else and play a Fender and love that better....it's a very hard decision to make...just play them and try to make up your mind from that !!!!! SKcave above me mentioned the Humbucker pickup....that's my nephew's business...Seymour Duncan... (he's originaly from New Jersay), have you ever heard a Gibson with those pickups...great sound !!!!!!

My dad is a professional musician...he has a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson. He loves them both. He plays his Fender more though, he says he likes it better. I am not really sure why. When I was going to buy a guitar for my husband my dad said to get him a Fender Strat. Not sure why but like I said he likes the Fender better.

Gibsons have humbucking pickups, which give a "warmer " sound. The Fender Strat is the rock'n'roll guitar of all time. Thr best way is tl go to your local music shop and try out a Strat against a Les Paul. See which one does it for you. Hope this helps.

Gibson....I just like the quality and "feel" of Gibson guitars , plus I think they sound better....Fenders are good for the beginner though....lighter , cheaper and a little bit more easy to play.

Which is better for ME? Fender - interchangable parts, full (25.5" scale) choice of maple or rosewood fretboard, pickup configurations, body comfort and tone. I played a Les Paul for years and still like them for certain things but a Strat is the best all-round guitar - to ME.

The rest of us can say which instrument we prefer, but only YOU can determine which guitar is better for your style of music and playing.
