Someone told me that if you apply permanent hair dye (a darker colour then your natural colour) only a couple of hours after washing your hair, it doesn't stick or something? Consequently making it not dye properly... is this true?

So basically if I go to the salon, I shouldn't wash and condition my hair beforehand?

Thanks

I've worked for one of the top salon haircolor companies for over 16 years. When applying permanent color, it is okay to apply it to unshampooed hair. However, if you have a lot of product & oil build up on your hair, common sense tells you that you will have a much better color result, if you start with a clean pallette. Dirt & oils on your hair have nothiing to do with your hair being more protected from "ammonia." If you decide to shampoo before haircolor, you do not want to overly manipulate your scalp, that way your scalp won't be irritated before the color service. Conditioning hair before a chemical serivce is not recommended, as the extra conditioner build up can impact the color's ability to deposit, evenly. Your hair is most protected when you have a professional applying color to your hair that knows what they are doing. 99% of the time, hair is damaged from haircolor because the person applying it is inexperienced and has not properly analyzed what is right for your hair type, porosity, and overall condition. Some haircolor lines recommend to shampoo/towel dry before applications, such as demi permanents. In addition, when highlighting with foils, a colorist has more control over the hair when the hair is shampoo/towel dried. Just use common sense and ensure you are trusting your overall hair health to a qualified hairdresser.

hair dye goes better on unwashed hair.. like 2 days
because when you go dye it, if it was washed the day before, the hair will not have its natural oils to protect itself from the amonia and chemicals in the hairdye
which damages the hair a lot more
