I am not a fan of the Southern Baptist Convention. There is doctrine within the convention I do not agree with.
I know very little about the Independant Baptist churches, because they all hold their own doctrine.

Those who are following Jesus more purely do not cling to dogma, but to trust in our Lord and what He did for us on the cross.
I go to an independent baptist church, as we believe in letting God's Holy Spirit lead us, and not in following a lot of rules and regulations made by man. We believe that anyone in this world (baptist, episcopalian, Church of God, or non denominational, etc) who has accepted Jesus as their Saviour is part of God's church and are all our brothers and sisters in Christ. The church is the body of Christ- and there is only ONE body. That body consists of all believers in Jesus.
So, all I can say is that only God knows who is following Him more purely, and I am sure there are some from all denominations who worship Him in spirit and truth. None of us is perfect. But we keep trying to please Him.

The differences between the two are primarily organizational. SBC has a central office where corporate decisions are made and funds are pooled and dispersed, like the Methodists, Catholics and other organized groups.
Independent means exactly that. The local church administers its own program and does not answer to a governmental body.
As to who is following Jesus more "purely," that remains a personal and individual matter.

We have no real reason to suspect the things attributed to Jesus were actually said by Jesus, but were instead responses by later scribes to perceived heresies.
Even if Jesus had originally been quoted, according to Dan Ehrman's "Misqouting Jesus" the Gospels and other Biblical writings have been altered and mistranslated so often that the originals can only be guessed at.
So, your question cannot be reasonably answered.

Religion pure and undefiled is defined in James 1:27. I haven't heard of these groups but I know atheists who unknowingly follow Christ so purely.

i think niether one. i think that the original and first branch of christans and catholics strive to follow in His example the closest. i'm talking about the Roman Catholics. the roman catholic church is the oldest orginization in the world. it is 2007 years old, and has not changed that much in structure in a while. and if you're saying 'the jewish religion is older than catholicism' will it is. but the jewish haven't kept up a formal orginization the whole time. there's still a jewish religion of course, but not a jewish church, with bishops, and popes, etc.

I think it likely that both of them are "Holier than thou" (and each other).
Why? Because that's human nature.
