This is not a new question...I've asked it myself, before I came to faith. As you read through Genesis, you'll find that more kids were born to Adam & Eve. And while we find incest gross, back then the human race was more pure, and not given to the problems that incest would now have. It also served its purpose to populate the earth, as God instructed. If you need more help understanding this, or anything else, feel free to e-mail me. I will do my best to find the answer. <*)))><

It would be nice to have a dollar for every time this question is asked.
Adam was age 130, year 130 when Seth was born Gen.5:3; what might the population have been?
The bible mentions Cain who kills Abel and Seth is born, there could be many more even than Jacob had at age 130.
At year 2168, Jacob is born, Gen.25:26; At year 2298, Jacob is age 130, Gen.47:9,11; he is in Rameses Egypt with Gen.46:27; 70 family members.
The oldest son is age 51 [ of his 13 childre, 12 are the 12 tribes of Israel ];
If he had been having children from age 30, he could have has a lot more.
Jacob died age 147 Gen.47:29; Year 2315.

At least one other son of Adam and Eve is mentioned. Seth took the place of Able. If people would just read the Bible these questions are easy. Notice where it says he begat sons and daughters. Only 3 children of Adam and Eve are mentioned by name because they were the important ones. There were many more.
Genesis 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Gen 5:4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

Adam and Eve did not only have two children. They actually had many children, although the Bible does not specifically state a number. They did have daughters as well and it is said that Adam and Eve likely had more than 50 children.
"After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters." Genesis 5:4

In my early years of thinking the scriptures I asked that comparable question. i develop into informed that Adam and Eve had little infants. reason has to rule. in case you have been kicked out of bible learn, then your instructor is a fool. The Bible is extremely silent on that factor, yet so it somewhat is on many different matters, on account that a lot develop into lost interior the translation and guy has a weak point for extrapolating issues in conflict with the data. Cain did marry his sister. this is right. it somewhat is my religious wisdom that rational questioning might desire to be utilized to unreasonable statements for the carnal guy can under no circumstances understand religious issues on account that he's an enemy to God. it somewhat is by way of the Holy Ghost that it somewhat is barely a possibility to appreciate the certainty of all issues. The Holly Ghost won't stay in unholy temples. i'm useful that all and sundry your questions would be spoke back in due time in case you persevere. undergo in recommendations this, that reason has to rule. yet another ingredient this is under no circumstances pronounced interior the Bible is that God has a spouse, yet he does. do no longer make something this is unreasonable the inspiration of your ideals and you will no longer bypass incorrect.

Good question. I believe the story of Adam and Eve are meant to describe the heritage of the Jewish people. Genesis does refer to Cain leaving to go to another land and had a wife there, not that she was a sister. Don't take the story too literally. It has many good lessons in it.
Just an aside, the 144 mentioned in another answer is really 144,000 and not meant to be the number of people who end up in heaven, but the number in heaven that are descendents of the 12 tribes of Israel.

Speaking about Adam, he had other sons and daughters.

*slaps forehead* Your "deeply religious grandmother" apparently needs to read the entire book fo Genesis. Actually, not even all of it. Just the part that mentions the third son, Seth, from whom we're all descended (according to Biblical mythology).

Actually if you read the entire accunt you will find the truth, some thoelogians have "discovered" what latter-day saints or (mormons) have known for years!! Adam and Eve had many sons and daughters before and after cain and abel. the reason why they mention these two is to teach a very important part of history. first, that cain was the first murderer and that abel was the first martyr. cain found a wife among the daughters of one of his brothers or sisters and took her to be his wife. now we do not know haw far down the lineage his wife had existed before this, but we are all part of that same family. you get it?

Adam and Eve probably had more children...
but in Genesis 4:17 is says "Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch." So we could have desended from Cain...
