At sixty miles per hour, you're traveling 5,280 feet every minute, which means 88 feet per second. Since most States require ten seconds of signal time, that means you should turn on your signal at least 880 feet before you make any directional or lane changes. I'd suggest 1,000 feet (roughly 2/10 of a mile) in order to be safe. Good luck!

Just use common sense. We've all been frustrated by people who signal too late or too soon, so use that as a guideline. Forget about distance, since it can be difficult to judge, and varies with your speed. Once you do it a few times, it will become second nature.

Is there another vehicle up your rear?.Do your turnsignals work?.If they do good ,get signalling.Do your brakes function?.Are you already on the hard shoulder?.Is your granny a passenger. And does she have her belt on?.Or is she in the trunk?.Could you not keep right on going so as you do not have to do this dangerous manouvre?.Are you getting chased?. By a patrol car!.
