If you would like to get a retainer then you would have to make an appointment to see an orthodontist (a special type of dentist that deals with braces and retainers). At that appointment the orthodontist will determine whether or not you need braces and/or a retainer.

well you will go to the dentist and her or she will tell you that you may or may not need an orthodontist. an orthodontist does not clean your teeth, they provide things such as retainers and braces. You will then find an orthodontist and he or she will tell you if you need one or not.

A retainer usually follows orthodontic treatment, so yes, you'd have to go to the ortho. How would you get one otherwise?

yes because you need to get a mold done and they need to see what's wrong with your teeth, so you might need braces too.
