My wife and i found out that we will be having our first child a couple days ago and she's wondering if it's safe to continue to dye her hair.

I wouldnt for the first 3 months.

But theres no evidence to suggest or support that it effects the baby in anyway.

I read that you shouldn't in the first 3 months, but then after that, it should be fine. The concern is the dye going through the scalp. I read that highlights are the safest way to go because there is minimal contact to the scalp.
When you are pregnant, though, you are told that EVERYTHING can hurt the baby! ;) It's pretty overwhelming. you kind have to pick and choose what you feel is most important. Just follow your gut. I wouldn't dye my hair in the first 3 months though, because that is the most critical time of the pregnancy. After that, it becomes more relaxed.. ;)
good luck!

In the 50s hair dye contained chemicals that could harm a pregnancy. There is a reason there is no warning on current hair dyes- they are safe.

I am 37 weeks and have highlighted my hair throughout the entire pregnancy. My Dr said that it was fine to highlight but dyeing the whole head wasn't the best. Something about how sensitive your scalp is normally let alone during pregnancy.

well most hair dyes contain high levels of amonia and i would think inhaling amonia is not safe. If inhaling a cigarette is not safe then an amonia based product certainly can't be safe. I am 18 weeks pregnant and i normally dye my hair but i won't until i have given birth. If you want to be sure ask the doctor.

If she dyes her hair just for fun, then I'd say wait till she delivers. If she dyes it to conceal gray hair, though, I'd say go ahead and dye it. There'll be more harm done by looking bad for 9 months and feeling miserable about it than by the chemicals in the dye :)

There is no proof that it hurts the baby, but at the same time, there is no proof that it DOESNT hurt the baby.

To be on the safe side, at least wait until the 2nd trimester, and have her buy a dye that doesnt use ammonia (i think its called natural instincts or something?)

Yes! people used to tell me i couldn't all the time then I asked a friend of my moms who is a hair stylist and she said yes. She was actully very mad about people thinking they cant because she collored many of people's hair at work and her babie are perfect. As quoted by her. I did mine also while I was pregnant.
