The caste system. It is Hinduism's single biggest liability. It may have worked as an ancient form of division of labour, but it soon metamorphosed into something monstrous whose effects we're still trying to mitigate.

Why should a professor wants you to know the negative effects of Hinduism, for me its soo good and has lots and lots to give to this world. If there is soo much good in that, i dont think why your professor wants you to know its negative effects.
Since you have asked, i may say discrimination based on caste has made hinduism less popular..
Eventhough caste system is in itself was a successful, it got degenerated. and now the christian missionaries propagate false things about people been discriminated based on caste in india.
This missionary is the main cause of enimity between different caste in the indian society now.

Well asceticism would be a good one. Many schools of Hinduism, especially before the time of the Buddha (who affected many Hindus as well) thought that to reach enlightenment you had to live off of a single grain of rice a day or similar small amounts of food. The effect on the human body is definitely a negative thing.

Just to "Bash" Hindu religion-"Professor" is an imaginary character.Hindu Religion and related religions Buddhism,Jainism,Sikhism alone have the Positive aspects(1) Hindu Religion has not advocated nor fought "Holy Wars" to spread their Religion.(2) They do not preach "Thy shall not Kill' and practice Killing 65 million people of their OWN religion in 2 world wars and 6,000.000 innocent, innocous,un-armed people, including women and children in Gas Chambers.(3) After Emperor Asoka(325 B.C.E.) No Hindu Ruler has fought a war for almost 2325 years for grabing others lands.(In recent years they have "defended" but Not "offended" any other nation for Gain.) (4) Caste system is a socio-Political issue. Not a religious issues.A Hindu and a christian of the same "Caste" will marry--but a Roman Catholic Christian of a "Higher"(?!!) caste will NOT marry a Roman Catholic Christian of a "Lower"(?!!) caste in India even in 2007 October!!!!.These are all "Negative" aspects of Hindu religion.Professor should be very happy.

Perhaps your Professor is a fundamental Christian or of any other religion and wants to know what is wrong with Hinduism - he is looking for faults and not what is good. That is a character flaw in my opinion.

What kind of professor would assign something like that. All Eastern religions have been incredibly peaceful compared to their western counterparts.
