I have many times asked whether, in our neighborhood, the amputee down the street, Mr. Farber, will get a new leg if everybody fervently pray for him.

On this question it seems that Christians and Atheists agree: In effect, you can pray til you're blue in the face, and he'll never get a new leg.

Question: Is this maybe the beginning of common ground that I have long sought in my heart and soul? The beginning, just a small beginning, of common ground, between our atheist citizens and our christian citizens?

Oh please dear imaginary God say yes!

There is also the fact that many people find some peace of mind via prayer, although this is not universal, and when it occurs, it is an internal experience, not one that changes external or medical matters.

And are you looking for common ground by pointing out to Christians that prayer doesn't work? That would be gratifying if it would help build a bridge, but you're basically asking them to admit that their god is haphazard, ineffective, and nonevident.

He could pray for an artificial leg, and Jesus would come down and put it on for him.
