And I have tried the powder stuff today, then brushed him...And only a couple fleas actually came out, he has really short hair and I dont know how they can hide in there.I washed all fabrics today too... But should I go back to the vet store and stick a flea collar on him even if he has fleas? WIll it help at all?

I have grown up with cats my whole life, but I have never had the responsibility of caring for one. This is my first time, any help would actually help. Thanks.

Ok collars and powder don't work very well. Get wet flea treatment. Such as Frontline Plus. If you get a box (6 treatments) it lasts about... 2 years... You put it on the cat when the fleas come back but it needs to be AT LEAST 2 months later.

Powders don't work! And flea collars are the worst - they REALLY don't work. They only treat the neck area - so the fleas just stay away from the neck!

You can't buy useful flea treatments in stores or supermarkets. They're all just a big gimmick, and many are harmful. You can only get decent treatment from a vet - just pop in to buy some Frontline or Advantage, or Revolution,. These are pipettes of liquid that you apply to the skin on the back of the cat's neck, they kill all fleas within 24 hours and keep your cats flea-free for at least a month.

You also need to be aware that you may need to spray your house, as this is where the fleas live and breed. Again, don't use any stupid pet store stuff! No 'bombs'! Veterinary sprays only.

See your vet for the proper meds for your cat. I have four kitties and a Rottie and live in the country where they go inside and out at will. Never see a flea, I use revolution every month and treat my yard, just the acre right around the house, not the whole thing. I have never had much success with home remedies for consistent flea prevention. Shampoos and powders kill the fleas on them at the time but don't repel more from jumping on. You should try frontline (over counter), or revolution (which usually requires a prescription), and be consistent, use it once a month.
The eggs fall off and then hatch in your carpets, rugs, bedding, and furniture. You need to go to your local pet store and ask for a spray that is safe for use around your cat and spray the entire house, especially where the cats hang out. In the past I used Raid flea killer. Also, putting moth balls in your vacuum cleaner bag or canister will help to kill any eggs, fleas, or larva that are sucked up, and vacuum and change the bag or empty canister FREQUENTLY. Otherwise, they will hatch in the vacuum and crawl out later. If the pet goes outside you should also treat your yard. I use sevin dust. Apply just before a rain shower, or use a hose or sprinkler to wet the lawn immediately after application.
If the infestation of the home is too bad you may see persistent fleas and need to treat more than once, or call a professional. I know it's a lot of work, but once you've got them bad it can be expensive to fix. Also, once your cats are flea free, if they scratch a lot, then They may need to see the vet. They can develop a topical, or skin infection from digging themselves.
Hope this helps! Best wishes.

Flea collars should not be used with any other type of topical treatment such as frontline or revolution. Plus, they just don't work, and pose more health risks to the pet than to the fleas. Good luck to you

Fleas can enter the house in unexpected ways (such as on pants cuffs). Therefore even indoor cats can get fleas.

Definitely get flea drops to put on the base of your cat's head from the vet. If you ask they will administer the first dose and show you how and where to do it. My cats use 'Advantage'. Your cat's age and weight will determine the prepackaged dose.

However, you need to keep up with the vaccuming, fabric washing and monthly flea drops. Fleas have a life cycle. In certain egg stages you cannot tell they are still there. Then they will come back and suprise you. But if you try, you will win, not the fleas.

Good Luck

My cat is constantly coming in with fleas. i don't know where he gets them from, but there are loads of cats in the area, so they are probably being transferred from one to another. i use tablets every 6-8 weeks. I used to cart him off to the vets every 6 months for an injection, but that only sterillised the fleas when they bit him. I'm finding the tablets are much better, because the fleas die and don' t get left alive all over the house. i also have sticky flea traps which work really well, too. After about 2 years of battling, I am finally winning the war against fleas in my house.

I hope this is helpful.

Hi,Frontline is one of the best products available and vets recommend it,I have used this on my kitten for 4 months now and since then he has not had a single flea on him.I used some flea bombs a few months ago too ,they have got rid of the fleas in my home 100%

My favorite is Advantage--it is safe, works great, and if applied monthly you will get rid of your flea problem for good if she stays inside. Are there other pets that come in and out? They could be bringing in new fleas and should be treated as well. Don't use over the counter Hartz type products or flea collars--they are toxic. Flea collars are useless.

go to the vet and get some Revolution, apply it to the cats shoulders and voila! good for 1 month, no fleas, ticks, parasites, ear mites. Make sure you wash bedding, clean floors, and use a spay bomb for baseboards and carpets. Fleas can live in the carpet for up to 6 months. Keep the cat on Revolution for a few months so she doesn't reinfect. Other products that work are Frontline, Advantage, just make sure it's for cats.
