Road bikes are faster on the road than mountain bikes. There are several reasons: Road bikes tend to have lighter frames and wheels. Tires are slicks, thinner and higher pressure to reduce rolling resistance. The rider position with dropped handlebars is more aerodynamic. A road bike usually has gear ratios that provide less power but much more speed than a mountain bike.

As everyone said, yep. Road bikes have a geometry more oriented to going fast, the wheels diameter is larger and the tire width is a lot thinner than a mountain bike, and without knobs. The gearing is more oriented toward speed.

And the terrain where they ride is smooth, where a mountain bike is a lot rougher.

It's like saying if an Audi A4 is faster than a Land Rover. Both vehicles can be very good, but each designed for different terrain and abuse.

The road bike is the most efficient machine in the history of the world. That is not an opinion but fact. Every pedal stroke is designed to transfer the maximum amout of power to the rear wheel. The same can't be said for a mountain bike. The heavier weight and the use of suspensions on some models steal a lot of the mountain bikes power transfer. It's not as efficient but it's sturdier.

Depends what type of riding you're doing. I ride a hybrid. So not it's not as fast as a road bike on paved surfaces but faster than a mountain bike. Vice versa in the dirt.

There is not bike for all terrain ...... All MTB , hybrid bike , road bike and touring bike was designed and build for different roads and for different use . Road bike is fast , hybrid is good for commuting but slower to climb the hill , MTB is slow but fast to climb hills in logging roads and another rough terrain , Touring bike take more abuse then road or hybrid bike but not like MTB and it is little slower then racing bike . If you look for rigidity and speed on most terrain you may encounter and do not really need racing bike or MTB , good quality treking or cross bike made in Germany , Holland or England suitable for touring and commuting even on dird hard packet roads will be the choice . Another option is to have modified MTB , run higher gear , big wheels and skinny tires . I think that Gary Fisher make this kind of bicycles .....

Hey there

Road bikes are by far faster , for loads of reasons,

They have skinny wheels, which means they have less rubber in contact with the ground which gives less rolling resistance which means you dont have to work so hard to get the same speed.

The tyres are generally smooth as opposed to knobblies on a mountain bike tyre, once again less rolling resistance smooth as opposed to bumpy, smooth wins every time.

Then the road bikes are lighter which again less work for you to get the bike to your desired speed.

Then road bikes, no suspension, making the mountain bike heavier, also as somebody has already said it saps your energy when pedalling making it a lot harder for you to reach the same speed.

The shape of the frame is designed to maximise energy efficiency , also to position you in a position that you create less wind resistance so you don';t have to work so hard to get going .

There are loads more but I think you are getting the idea

Hybrids are a nice compromise between the two still fairly quick, but suitable for light off road use, def would not use them for downhilling.

anyhow good luck with whatever you were thinking.

If you factor the increase in bent rims and flat tires, my road bike is not faster than my mountain bike.

I made the transition a pair of 12 months in the past, and become questioning the comparable concern. right that's what i got here across as quickly as I made the change. a million. velocity larger, yet not sufficient to be rather well worth the investment via itself. If that's the only concern you somewhat need to extend, you're dissapointed. 2. universal attempt decreased. This become a extensive ingredient that i spotted. by way of fact the bike become lighter, and greater useful, i become waiting to experience longer distances conveniently. This become great for me as i had to experience longer without the wear on my leg muscular tissues. 3. I enjoyed driving the recent bike plenty by way of fact it become new. It had greater useful kit, and become shinny. 4. i become nonetheless getting handed via individuals. some that have been even driving a mountain bike! the main significant concern with velocity is the rider, not the bike. So, looking on what you somewhat need to do, the cost could be well worth it. i don't be apologetic approximately my purchase, even however my velocity merely larger extremely. As some others have stated, you are able to advance your velocity via changing tires (narrow tires furnish much less friction and subsequently can advance your velocity, yet will certainly make your attempt flow down). you additionally can advance your velocity via dropping the finished weight (that's in many circumstances performed with a clean bike, or via dropping weight off your physique). finally, the excellent thank you to extend your velocity, is to artwork on your cadence (how briskly you pedal). this would contain some coaching, yet for sure, the quicker you pedal, the quicker you progression.

road bikes are significantly faster than their cousins, the mountain bikes. this is due mainly to the fact that roadies are much lighter (road bike - about 17lbs average; MTB- about 27lbs average).

the thinner tires also present much less friction on the road which means more speed.
