I actually use paint shop pro for almost all the art I do. But I have version 7.

None the less, it should be about the same:

The easiest way I can think to do what you are asking is to use the "freehand" selection tool and outline what you wish to color. (Looks like a lasso in 7).

Then under the "color" menu go to "colorize" and play with the hues.

Though there is one thing to note: If it a black and white picture you may have to increase the color depth of the picture first, or the colorize menu will not work. This is also done through toe "Color" collapsable list up top. "Increase Color Depth"

Good luck ^^

Make the image black and white by desaturating the colours. Then, using the history brush, paint over the area you want to remain the original colour. Done.

Or another method:
Make a duplicate of the first layer and turn that layer to black and white. Then using the eraser tool, erase the areas you want colour revealing the colour layer underneath.

Converting to black and white the proper way is a whole different kettle of fish but just desaturating the colour would be ok.

PSP 8 allows the use of layers. Make a duplicate layer. Select the area you wish to retain in colour, using the freehand selection tool. Delete the rest. Desaturate the other layer, turning it into black and white - or convert it to greyscale. Merge.
