I found "the dress" except the train is longer than I want for the smaller wedding we are having. Is it possible for a seamtress to hem the length of the train, making it a sweep instead of a chapel length?

A good seamstress will be able to do want you want with the train.

Don't do it yourself! Make sure you have an experienced seamstress do this!

As long as there is no beading at the bottom of the train, this should be very easy for a good seamstress to do. If there is any type of beading, that will be much more difficult and expensive - they would most like have to take it up at the waist and possibly restructure the skirt.

Yes! Just be sure to find an experienced seamstress. I suggest going to a bridal boutique and finding out who they recommend and if that person does work on the side or strictly for the boutique. It is pricey to get it hemmed though.

First i would be asking in the bridal shop if I could order it in with a smaller train or if they can modify it in store for me.
I would be very careful about who I get to do this for me. So many things can happen. If the dress gets soiled while in transit, it is you that is going to be stressed and foot the bill for the dry cleaning.

Absolutely, but make sure either your dress shop or a professional seamstress handles the alterations.

A good seamstress/tailor can do anything!!

Sure! NO problem. You could do it yourself. Use VERY sharp scissors and cut the train the length that you desire. Fold it in half and make sure that you cut it accurately. The cut is the hardest part.

Then put a tiny hem and then double that hem to make sure that it doesn't unravel.

Yes you can, but remember if there is elaborate bead work it will be very difficult and expensive to move it all up. If it is just fabric its easy.
Please have it done professionally.
