Im sure many folks here have heard of the fabled Normal.dot template file becoming corrupt and creating start-up trouble for Microsoft Word of all versions. After messing around with my girlfriends laptop trying to figure out why it took 10 minutes for Word 2007 to start-up I came across this problem.. When I deleted the Normal.dotm file from her Template folder, Word started up in less than a second, VERY FAST.. I closed Word and started it back up, and yet again, slow 10 minute start-up... I went back to her template folder and noticed the Normal.dotm file was there again... So Word creates this file everytime, which is normal for it to "repair" itself.. however, it continually creates this "corrupt" version of it so we have to delete that file each time we open MS Word.. Is there a way to delete it once and for all? Or perhaps make a working version of it? Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

Deleting the normal.dotm (normal.dot in previous versions) can be a quick way to resolve some problems in WORD. But since it is still not working properly, you might want to try to Repair MS WORD. Go to Add/Remove Programs. Select WORD and select Repair. If that doesn't work, then it may be time for a reinstall from scratch.

Haven't tried this yet, but I will to see if it helps my Word load faster.

Rename normal.dot to normal.old
create your own Word document and save it to normal.dot in the templates folder

I hope it flies.

The Normal.dotm template opens whenever you start Microsoft Office Word 2007, and it includes default styles and customizations that determine the basic look of a document.
Change the Normal.dotm template
Any changes that you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to documents that you create in the future.
1. Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Open.
2. Do one of the following:
 In Windows Vista:
Click Templates, and then double-click the Normal.dotm file to open it.
 In Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003:
Click Templates next to File name.
If no templates are listed in the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to the Files of type box, and then click All Word Templates.
3. To be certain that you're working in the default template, check to see that Normal.dotm appears in the Word title bar.
4. Make any changes that you want to the fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. You can use the same commands and features that you use to change a document — but remember that any changes that you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to documents that you create in the future.
5. When you have finished, click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save.
Note If Normal.dotm is renamed, damaged, or moved, Word automatically creates a new version (which uses the original default settings) the next time that you start Word. The new version will not include any of the customizations that you made to the version that you renamed or moved.
