Hi,
It sounds like an Abscess (an infection in the gum). These can be really painful and tender. They are caused by bacteria in the mouth. An abscess may subside, grow, and eventually they will burst.
DONT BURST IT. Bursting it is increasing the risk of the infection spreading elsewhere inyour mouth. You can either go to your Doctor and he will prescribed you with some antibiotics or use these methods which both work wonders.

First rinse your mouth out with either salted water or a mouth wash. Crush up a clove of Garlic and dab this onto the area of pain (the lump). Make sure you use a clean finger. You only need a very little bit. Leave it there for about 5 mintues then rinse out your mouth. Do this first thing in the morning and at night before bed.
OR
Buy some pure clove oil and rub one drop of this oil into the area. Repeat three times a day. BOTH dont taste very nice but it will be gone within 5 days.

Is the lump soft or hard? Do you have any sensitivity? Any discomfort? Pain? If it's more of a bubble then you could have a dental abscess. If it's a little bit on the harder side with some pain then you could have a perio abscess. Or if the gum is just tender then maybe you just traumatized the tissue...meaning you might have poked your gum with something you were eating...potato chip, tortilla chip etc or you could have inadvertently burned that area with something hot that you were eating. If it persists, or if you are in alot of discomfort/pain, you should see your dentist.

Most likely possibility is a hard food partical got deep below your gums. Brush 3 times daily. If you still have it in 5 days or it becomes worse, see a dentist or dental hygeinist to have them probe and clean.

If you feel anxious about any abnormality in your mouth you should ALWAYS have it checked out by a dentist. They might say it's an ulcer, or an abcess, or they may say that it's something more ominous.

If you had a lump anywhere else that you were unsure about wouldn't you go to the doctor??

sounds like you have an abscess (infection), go to a dentist right away, he will put you on antibiotics to deal with the infection and after that he will repair or pull the tooth.
