Mostly its a bunch of self help courses. Good stuff.
There is also a Church of Scientology that does the same thing and they also hold services on sunday which are non-denominatial (real generic stuff).
Actually there is alot less to say about what it is compared to all the stuff that will be said against it. I hung around a center for a couple years and took some of their courses. I didnt see any of the stuff that is said about it. But then of course all that stuff is supposed to be secret stuff that only the highest ups apparently know. :)

Scientology is based on many things, but it is true that the original idea was pure fiction.
Lafayette Ronald Hubbard said so himself on his deatbed, that it was an "experiment" to see how far he could go (read "The Wave").
Infact he tried to brainwash his son into being the head of the organization, at which point his son tried to kill himself.
It does sort of revolve around money, in the sense that poor people never get far, but the that is mainly because thay cant afford the "advanced courses", heel most people cant afford them because they each cost somewhere around 3000 dollars.
The scientologists believe in this because the human mind is amazingly flexible. It can be bent or broken with the right application of stimulus. Think of it this way, if hundreds of people killed themselves in jonestown, wouldnt it be easier to convince them to pay up?
They believe that psychology is wrong because psychologists use drugs and because psychologists base their results on existance of cells. Scientologists dont believe in drugs, and you have to go through detox, during which you take no drugs. Which is kind of sill, because what if you are diabetic? So they call themselves a self-help organization and lots of yokels fall for it. Even though the reason they hate psychiatrists is because Hubbard was crazy and a danger to his family, so psychologists said he should be contained, but no one listened, and then hios son tried to kill himself (surprise, surprise).
Quite frankly, i think the only reason they havent all "drank the kool-aid" is because then they couldnt pay for the self help courses.
And hey "Gandalf Parker" is a scientology troll. A very bad one too, just look at his post. I found out he was a "high" level scientologist a ways back but he changed his name. Look how he tells you:
"I hung around a center for a couple years and took some of their courses. I didnt see any of the stuff that is said about it. But then of course all that stuff is supposed to be secret stuff that only the highest ups apparently know. :)"
How transparent. Classic troll routine, tell the audience you agree with their opinion "but there is some truth to the other argument". I learned that in troll-defense school when I was 12 years old.
His post should tell you everything you need to know, they lie, and they arent even that good at it like actual religions.

I agree! Read Dianectics! It will give you some insight as to where hubbard's brain was when he wrote it. There are things in that book that are simply false, unproven and just rediculous. Hubbard wanted this book to be respected in the medical field. When it was called nonsense by some psychiatrists he went insane and tries to this day to destroy the whole profession. Because they didn't like hubbards' book he decided that psychiatry is the cause of all the horrible things that have happened in this world....even Hilter and 9-11. I wonder what it would be like if the Psychiatric profession embraced the book?

Best is do a search in googles, tons of detailed info. All i can tell you is that many hollywood stars are into scientology like tom cruise, john travolta. It believes that we come from thetans and we're all aliens, and king of alien is imprisoned in a volcano bla bla. Fun to read, gets funny. How true is the religion? You'll be the judge. Just read it up.

Oh man. There was this science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard who wrote a book in the seventies about aliens being our true ancestors.
And some people, who don't realize the fiction in science fiction, decided that was correct and dubbed Hubbard as their religious leader.
It is funny because Hubbard was all religious about it too...really scientology is a bunch of crazies who take poorly written books way too seriously.
So yes, it is a religion based off of a science fiction novel.

A billion dollar "religion" based on a sci-fi novel saying we came from aliens. It is such a cult in Hollywood that people who get suckered into it are forbidden to leave to the point that the church has no qualms about making sure careers are destroyed and families are literally torn apart, etc.
