I have been having pretty bad reactions to the ceftin from the first time i took it, i thought it was just normal since it appears to be a strong drug. Now i recognize that is it more likely an allergic reaction to the sulfate in it. How could my doctor be so stupid? Am i missing something here, is sodium lauryl sulfate not considered a sulpha medication? Should i continue taking the ceftin despite my obvious allergy to it? Ive been taking it for 2 days and id hate to lose that time with antibiotics and have to start over on a new one. I just want to be done with this and im starting to lose my mind over this entire ordeal. I was originally prescribed this for a ear/throat infection.
Would amoxacillin be ok to take for something like this? THat i know i can tolerate. What should i tell my doctor when i go back to see him on monday and tell him he prescribed me a drug that i told him i was allergic to? Is it legal to kick him in the balls and spit in his face? please advise.

the reaction im having is GI upset, my scalp feels like its burning and crawling, dizzyness, and general lethargy/weakness.
im wondering if the reason my skin/scalp is feeling so horrible is because sodium lauryl sulfate is apparantly used in shampoos and floor cleaners and many people report the same effect when they rub it on their heads? i still really want to know though, if i stop taking this today and go on amoxacillin (as i said before i can tolerate amox) will i lose the 2 days ive been taking ceftin, or will amoxacillin pickup where it left off?

To ease your initial fear, ceftin is not a sulfa drug. It does contain a sulfa on a side chain, but the sulfate is not the integral component of a functional group. This means that if you are allergic to sulfa drugs, you should not be allergic to ceftin. Ceftin is what is called a cephalosporin, which is structurally similar to the penicillins (of which, amoxicillin is one). If you have been allergic to penicillins in the past, there is a 15-30% chance that you will be allergic to cephalosporins as well. But since you have taken amoxicillin in the past, the chance of a severe reaction to the ceftin is not as likely. When I speak of severe reactions, I would be most concerned of anaphylaxis (swelling of the throat) that would lead to extreme difficulty in breathing. This is the same reaction that those allergic to bee stings experience. This reaction usually occurs within the first day of treatment, but may occur later in rare cases. If you have experienced anaphylaxis, you should seek immediate treatment as it could lead to respiratory distress.
What type of reaction are you having to the ceftin? The most common side effect is rash and GI upset (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.). If you are experiencing one of these side effects, as unpleasant as it may be, it won't lead to an outcome as severe as anaphylaxis. If you are experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated since diarrhea and vomiting cause you to lose significant amounts of body water.
For your allergy to sulfa drugs, the primary antibiotic that you need to avoid is sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim).
So to answer your question, if you have a sulfa allergy you will be fine taking ceftin. But if you have a penicillin allergy, you may want to avoid ceftin and especially amoxicillin.
If you have more questions, I'm sure your doctor or pharmacist would be happy to address them for you.

You should be good. What you are experiencing is just probably side of effects of the antibiotic - not allergic reactions. For example - the true name of Morphine is actually Morphine Sulfate. They do not have Sulfa in them. The most important thing to watch in an allergic reation is to watch the AIRWAY! If you ever feel like after taking a medication that you are having difficulty breathing, call 911 immediately! But I think you might be just a little anxious because the sulfate looks like sulfa.

Ceftin is NOT a sulfa drug. Sodium lauryl sulfate is NOT the antibiotic in it. Sodium lauryl sulfate is in many things, like toothpaste. You don't say what your symptoms are. You can have negative side effects from antibiotics and not be allergic to it. Sodium lauryl sulfate contains sulfur but so do many different things. Being allergic to sulfa drugs does not mean you are allergic to all sulfur containing compounds.

No. Tell the doctor in case he didn't get it the first time- which I don't think he did. And if he tries to make you keep taking that drug, or one of its relatives, get another doctor.
