Your Old English Dog sounds very cuddly. I had a friend who's pug constantly growled and drooled, and that was just his nature. He never bite anyone, or hurt anyone. In fact he was great with my daughter who was 1 year at the time. I have attached two websites. The first one deals with bonding with sheepdogs, and the second with training and bonding. Hope this helps.

OESD's are 'talkers' ... and if you think yours is 'growling' at you, that is one thing ... but if he is 'moaning' (which sounds very much like a growl, really) it's something COMPLETELY different. Try doing this ... go out and leave your dog in a room for at least half an hour. When you come into the room, what does he do? Does he look at you? Does his mouth open? Does his tail move? Can you see ANY movement in his skin under all of that fur? If you can see ANY of these things, your dog is 'bonded' to you. Try getting his leash out and taking him for a long walk. Old English are EXTREMELY lazy, so it's up to you to 'get him into good shape' and take him for walks, give him the right food (diet food if he doesn't like to move much), and pet him frequently. I'm betting those 'growls' you hear are actually 'moans of pleasure' ... but you DO need to talke him for a walk ... and get his weight down so he feels a bit more 'active' and wants to go on walks with you.

The best thing you can do for your OES (or any dog for that matter) is to be his leader, his Alpha. You accomplish this by establishing and enforcing pack rules through obedience training, the use of nilif (nothing in life is free), and daily "power walks."
You can get information on nilif by googling "alpha dog boot camp" (without the quotes).
A power walk is one during which the dog must walk at your side without forging ahead or pulling you. The dog is not permitted to sniff, mark, bark at things, potty, etc. unless you have called a break.
These things will give your dog the structure he wants nd needs as a pack animal. And, as a bonus, will increase the bond between you.

I think could be a breed thing, ours change a lot in attitude.Isn't that difficult ,you have to show him love in a doggy way .For example :give him treats after brushing, after bath or specially something he did and dislikes :) .Going to the park and play is a great way to bound. I did a lot of research and teach myself to think like my dog and understand his ways.He even was afraid of other dogs so I took him to agility classes. He was soooo lazy but got interaction with other dogs. You can get this in the park or having a walk with a friend and his dog.Now we have a lot of activities together and got closer and his growling had stop.
Hope this link could help you: http://www.dogmanners.com/posreinforce.html

One of our dogs is a "growly-bear" too! He's about 9 years old, a black lab mix, and has been growly ever since he was little. I have not figured out a way to change this, obviously. We know he's serious when he stops wagging his tail. Otherwise, he rumbles even when you rub his belly or his ears, which are things he likes! I think you shouldn't worry about it, as long as your dog's not acting aggressively in other ways -- teeth-baring, or changes in tail position or wagging, for example. Also, you feed him and walk him and snuggle him, HE LOVES YOU!

Every dog has a different personality! Some are happy all the time, some are grumpy all the time! Just because your dog is grumpy doesn't mean he doesn't love you!! Do special things with him, like going for a long walk, and talk sweet to him, I bet he will come around!! I hope this helps!

Sounds like your dog needs to know that you are the leader, Try getting involved in some activities with your dog.

Our dogs do that growly moany thing, if it is what i think, then he already loves you lots, does he do it when you pet him? Sounds like your doing the best thing for bonding, cuddling and petting, and lots and lots of treats.
