No. The *only* kind of chihuahua is just "chihuahua".

Be wary of breeders advertising they are selling "teacup" or "tiny toy" animals. These "teacup" and "tiny toy" dogs are usually the runts, which tend to have more health problems. There are no breeds that are actually called "teacup" or "tiny toy".

The Chihuahua Club of America does not condone the practice of "toy", "teacup", "mini", etc., chihuahuas.

Here is AKC's breed standard for chihuahuas:

Toy breeds are small enough already, without having to have extreme smallness specimens. You'll have a healthier dog if the breeder is breeding for the breed standard, not for some freakishly tiny dog.

They are deffinatley not a new breed of chihuaha here is some information on the subject.

Tea Cup Statement
The Chihuahua Is A Chihuahua

The Official AKC Breed Standard describes the Chihuahua as a small dog that comes in two varieties or coat types. The difference in coat type (the Long Coat and the Smooth Coat) is the only official description used to identify a difference within this breed. Our standard does not categorize the Chihuahua by size.

For the purpose of showing and record keeping, the American Kennel club includes the Chihuahua (along with 19 other breeds) in the Toy Group. Therefore, irrespective of their weight or physical stature ALL Chihuahuas registered with the AKC are considered to be a toy breed of dog.

As with all living things, there will be size variance between individual dogs within this breed. Look within the human family - brothers and sisters will differ in height and in weight, as well as other physical attributes. They are described as humans, male or female, and there is seldom if ever a need to break the description down further. The same holds true in regard to the Chihuahua; they are Chihuahuas - Long Coat / Smooth Coat!

Unfortunately, the additional adjectives used to describe the size differences and physical appearances are many and have been misused for so long they now seem legitimate. Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard - are just a few of the many tags and labels that have been attached to this breed over the years. The Chihuahua Club of America is concerned that these terms may be used to entice prospective buyers into thinking that puppies described in this way are of greater monetary value. They are not and the use of these terms is incorrect and misleading.

Occasionally, within a litter, there may be a puppy that is unusually small. That puppy is a small Chihuahua and any other breakdown in description is not correct. To attach any of these additional labels to a particular puppy is to misrepresent that Chihuahua as something that is rare or exceptional and causes a great deal of confusion among those new fanciers who are looking for a Chihuahua.

The Chihuahua Club of America does not endorse nor condone the use of any of these terms and would caution the perspective puppy buyer not to be misled by them.

We recognize that many Chihuahua fanciers do want the very small puppy. While they are adorable and can be perfectly healthy, the buyer should be cautioned as to the extra care that may be required with regard to their general health and well-being.

A Chihuahua is a Chihuahua...they are a toy breed, they are in the toy group..there are NO teacups..it is NOT a new breed...teacup is just a sales pitch irresponsible breeders use to sell runts of a litter or dogs delibrately bred to be smaller then standard calls for. They are very often unhealthy and have short lifespans.
If you want a Chihuahua look for one from a responsible breeder not for one from an irresponsible BYB.

Nope - it is a gimmick used by ignorant back yard greeders and puppy millers to try to sell their poor quality mass produced puppies. If someone offers you one, run the opposite direction and know they are simply into making puppies for greed and without regard to any health issues they are creating. Find a responsible breeder of Chihuahuas - they do exist but you will need to do your homework. Know that a good breeder doesn't have a litter or five at all times to be able to sell a pup from and you might have to wait for a pup but it is worth it because the person has CARED about what they are breeding and will exhibit a KNOWLEDGE about what they are doing... Check with the parent club of the Chihuahuas and ask for breeder referals -- contact several breeders and find one that is knowledgeable and willing to share good informtion on their breed with you - that doesn't have a monitary interest in you -- isn't trying to just sell you a dog but is more interested in you being a responsible purchaser of a good companion. Good luck...

No. There's no such breed with the word teacup. It's those backyard breeders create that kind of name so they can sell for more money. Imagine is Chihuahua is the smallest breed, how much smaller you are going to expect a "teacup" size?

It is just a really fancy word for "small" chihuahua. People get them by breeding small chihuahuas together then breeding the smallest of the litter, then the smallest of that litter, etc. They are just small chihuahuas. And DPs description is the best one here. They really are not good breeding stock.

They are as healthy as they are, but they are really delicate. As cute as they are, they shouldn't be made into breeding stock. I have seen them under 2lbs. Cute, but very easy to loose or injure.

Not at all.. They are the smallest and the sickest, the weakest bred to the other smallest, sickest and weakest, to produce tiny, sickly and weak .. cause people like tiny things.. It's a scam, a money grab... People think they are cute, so ... so called breeders produce these little sick things to fill a market desire.. When a dog is bred based on size alone, everything else suffers.. Health, temperament etc.. They aren't cute, they are heartbreakers. they die young and make little girls cry.

"Tea cup" dogs are a fad, not a breed.
The breeding of these horribly small dogs has inhumane consequences. Some of them have trouble breathing or trouble walking because they are so unreasonably small.

If you buy one you are just encouraging the continued breeding of them, teacup breeders don't care about the dog's health, they just care about the money.

no it isnt a new breed. it is a marketing term given to the runts of the litter so people will actually buy them. they often end up the same size as other chihuhuas. they r often unhealthy and dont live to their full potential. anyone who falls for that scam is a complete nitwit
