In the predawn hours, fish are more likely to hunt for food. Also, some fish are night feeders such as smelt.

During the summer months when the water temperature gets high, fish are more active at night, after the water cools down some.
Where I live ( Ky ) fishing during the day June - Sept. is a waste of time, water temps can get into the mid 80's to low 90's, so fishing at night is the only way to catch them.
And you are more prone to catch bigger fish at night.
Of course I am mainly speaking about bass, but do know that people fish for crappie, walleye, catfish, and others at night as well.

large mouth, spotted bass &smallmouths or brownies feed atleast every 12 hours not a dinner bell all feed at differnt times but at night
1)it's cooler in summer months
2)fish seem to be more active and roam instead of looking for shade
3)and you don't have to put up with dam ski boats &jet skis
4)just watch out for those drunk cat fishermen in pontoons w/ no lights on and drive slower some lake have night time speed limits e.g. TABLE ROCK in MO. 35mph-----my Ranger boat does 70mph ---- t-bone a pontoon at that speed and most likley you won't be around to fish the next night GOOD LUCK----GOFISH!!!!!!!

during certain times of year where I fish, night fishing can be more productive for certain species of fish. For some species like flathead catfish, most of the big fish are caught at night/early morning. For trout, the "hex" hatch comes off at night and often the biggest fish in the vicinity can be caught at night when otherwise they might not be active.
fish need food and saftey basically. Structure for saftey doesn't tend to move around too much (although it does in rivers more often than lakes), but food items can, especially baitfish and clouds of zooplankton that the baitfish eat.
if the bait fish and their food is more available at night, then the action for their predators might be better at night.
Some fish are not active night feeders though, like sunfish. dawn and dusk can be great, but dead of night not so much. In my experiance northern pike also tend not to feed at night.
Catfish feed more by scent and feel therefore are better suited for night feeding and often the biggest fish come out of their safe cover to feed at night.
Many fishermen claim that overall night fishing generally is not as productive as dawn and dusk fishing in terms of numbers of fish and voracity of strikes. There are exceptions of course.

For striped bass night fishing is better. The bass feeling safer under cover with no sunlight tend to move into shallow waters along the ocean surf.

simple! fish predominately feed at night! Most aquatic insect activity occurs after the sun has disappeared from the sky. that may be from clouds or the topography, but in general it happens after sunset. In a recent study that compared aquatic insect activity, called aquatic drift ( the mysterious action of nymphs in which they release themselves from their foothold in a river and "drift" with the current to a lower holding area) found that activity started near sunset, increased after sunset and peaked near midnight, then tapered off to almost non existence at sunrise and ceased at noon. Fly fisherman who fish rivers for trout understand this and that is why we fish in the evenings and at night if we are young and daring enough
