If you can get a job, Ingham is a great town to live in. One of my best friends lives there. Close to the beach, access to the Barrier Reef. Great lifestyle and still close to the cities if you need them.

Rockhampton and Cairns are also options if you prefer the city lifestyle.

It depends entirely on what work you want to do. Townsville is the biggest city in north Queensland and has the most job opportunities. There is no "best" town, the best one for you will be where you are working.

I would pick Cairns over Townsville.
Population around 140,000, quite spread out. The Northern beaches are great to live at. Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove etc. Look them up here http://www.qldbeaches.com/cairns-beaches.html

Townsville seems to have not much night life, whereas Cairns comes to life at night. Always something happening on the Esplanade.
