I'm trying to get an Internet connection to certain room in my house, but it's not possible without tearing apart the house. I already have telephone wires leading up to that room, and I'm wondering if I would be able to change those wires and outlet to use Internet instead.

Unless your existing phone wiring is already based on CAT5, it can't be done.

If you don't like or can't use wireless you may want to try
HPNA (Home phone network adaptors) or Powerline adaptors.
The first use special adaptors for networking using existing phone lines and the second uses the existing power outlets in the house. At least Netgear and Linksys sell the adaptors.

If you use cable internet, it's in the TV line!

If you use a modem, yes, the phone line is fine. If you use DSL and you are the only one using it, the carrier is there already but you may need to ask the phone company if the load on your line affects the signal strength adversely. You will still need to use the gateway and a CAT 5 (ethernet) cable from the gateway to the NIC (ethernet card-Network Interface Card). Cat 5 ethernet cables have more wires and bigger plugs that LOOK like telephone plugs but they don't fit--they WERE developed for PBX multiline business phone systems though, FYI.

You can get the cabling at the hardware store, Radio Shack etc in length and run it up the same way you got the phone line up there. You can drop it down the stairs and tack it to the ceiling or run it behind the trim strip at the bottom of the wall and they make a strip to conceal wiring along the bottom of the wall also. Ask the guy at the hardware/home store.

It's not hard to do and you can have a mechanically savvy friend help you do it in a short time.

As for rewiring existing telephone cable to create an internet connection, no, that can't be done. First of all ethernet connections are based on 6 cable twisted pair, most telephone outles are only 2 or 4 cable pairs. Second, the cable used for telephone is normally of low quality and unshielded and cannot be used for networking.

There are devices that will supposedly use your household wiring and or telephone jacks for internet access. I haven't used any of these, but have heard that while you can network two or more computers using these devices the speed is comparable to dial up or worse.

You would probably have more success with a wireless card and wireless router.

As annoying as it is you're probably going to get stuck having to run cable in order to get a good connection at full internet speeds.

truly the only distinction between the two is which you will of course have the skill to plug in a three pronged plug the place you ought to no longer before. for the reason which you do not have a floor twine, the three prong, functionally, is not any diverse, and hence poses no benefit over the two prong from a grounding attitude, so on the least, you're no worse off then you definately have been before. the main obligatory factor to observe for, different than making specific you place the wires one the appropriate terminals, is the difficulty of the twine itself. in the journey that your place is 60+ years previous, the twine sheathing might as we talk visit pot or crack as you're bending the twine around to place in the recent plug. in simple terms pay close interest to this and use electric tape to wrap any bare uncovered twine. if that is so i might advise in basic terms changing out those which you fairly need to and leaving something on my own. And bear in mind that changing that plug will no longer grant in spite of the fact which you're plugging in any extra risk-free practices from lightening or surges in any way, so in the journey that your purpose is to purpose to guard costly digital kit, you will ought to run a sparkling twine with a floor, or maybe then a surge protector is extremely recomended.
