i say that spanish is speaking just in south america and in spain .
but french is speaking in 5continents

THERE is a great differents with "the language the most speaking" and "the language the most widely"
i say , widely means the most area--expanse .
and "the most speaking "means how many poeple speak this language

so i'd say french is most widely than spanish ,of course spanish is most speak than french but french is the most widely
there are most french-speaker countries than spanish-speaker countries
french-speaker countries are more widely in the world than spanish-speaker countries
spanish -speakers countries are localised in the south america and in spain but french-speakers are localised in the 5continents. also french is the official language of the union with enlgish ,german

its the same thing with chinese-speakers they are localised in china but china is so great and widely and so crownded.
so chinese is the language the most spoken in the world

The United Nations lists as these languages:

English
French
Spanish
Russian
Cantonese

as the languages of trade and negotiation. English is normally chosen followed by French and then Spanish. However, Spanish is gaining ground as there are far more people who speak Spanish than French.

Unfortunately the language spoken by the most people in the world is CHINESE. This is because of the countries population only. As far as the most common language around the world it is English. English is accepted world wide. Air Traffic Controllers must have English speaking controller for aircraft in every country of the world. As for which is spoken more between French and Spanish. Spanish wins again only because the are far more Hispanic persons then there are French.

here's your best answer, think of it this way, latin america includes: mexico, central, south america and the carribean. And all these people speak spanish, except for Brazil. Also there are a lot of people who know spanish. Therefore spanish is spoken more than french.

I tend to agree with your definition of "widely spoken". French is a second language in many places (I think it's the only official language only in France), whereas Spanish is the first language in only a few places.
