The three best choices for your purpose are the 30-06, 308 & 30-30 calibers.* These three (3)* have harvested more Deer than any other calibers.* The other calibers are just that, other calibers.*

The .270 Winchester, and .280 Rem are great deer calibers. The .300 WinMag, and 7 mm RemMag are OK but really more powerful than you need.

The only place I can think of where you would not be seriously overgunned with a .338 WinMag would be in Alaska, where you could just as easily encounter a grizzly as a deer.

The quintessential deer cartridges for the Lower 48 States are, .308 Win, .30-'06 Sprfld, and the .30-30 WCF (which has probably killed more deer than any other three cartridges combined).

The difference between the 270 and the 280 is tiny indeed, with a difference in diameter of .277 vs. .284 bullets, and perhaps ten grains' difference in bullet weight, with both derived from the 30-06 case. Both are excellent choices for deer. The 7mm Remington Magnum, of course, will do anything the 280 will do, with a little more velocity. The larger magnums are considerably more than you need for deer, and offer no advantages, but as Elmer Kieth once queried, "You mean you can kill 'em too dead?" so you can certainly use them.
Personally, since I know how to shoot, I'm perfectly content with the 7x57 Mauser or 7mm08, burning less powder and giving up nothing compared to any of those choices, saving the big bangers for bigger critters, but I'm lucky enough to have plenty of rifles at home from which to pick.

The .338 and .300 Win. mags are overkills for deer. The .270 Win and .280 Rem are about ideal for deer and the 7mm Remington mag is a bit big but still good for deer.

Best.

A what range are they typically?

Under 150 yds. every1 you mentioned is over-powered. The 270 Win and 280 Rem are virtually identical. They both use a 30-06 case necked down to that caliber. And the magnums are usually for thick skinned game @ 300 yds and more.
Of course, I'm referring to whitetail deer not mule deer.

Of those listed the 270 ammo is most common and cheapest so that should be a consideration. The best all around deer caliber is a .30-06. This is what I would recommend. Any of the ones listed will work fine though.

They will all "work", but 270 caliber is the best all-around Deer caliber of all that you listed......It's a matter of distance you shoot and personal preference as to which one works the best for your shooting abilities. The 338 and 300 Magnum are extrtemely more than what you would ever need for an effective Deer cartridge

They are all good, but I prefer a .308 Winchester. I have 5 rifles that shoot .308. If you reload you can get military brass for the .308 cheap and there are so many bullet designs available for it you will never be able to try them all. I'd go with a 150 grain Hornady (#3033).

The .270 winchester would probably be best for deer.

270 winchester. has really flat trajectory and plenty of power. if you sight it at 250 yards the bullet will only drop 3 inches at three hundred yards, and it will be no higher than three inches out to 250 yards. so just aim center mass out to three hundred yards and it will hit the vitals.
