I had someone ask me how I could be Catholic and Christian. They said you can't be both. Do people not understand the denominations?

Edge: Protestants can believe what they want. Catholicism was around long before Protestant. Priests need many years of schooling to preach the Bible so that's I like being Catholic. My priest knows the Bible inside and out so thank ya

Boo,

Real Christians do. Hypocrites, don't. However Christ came to save hypocrites and sinners, so the Church is for them too. They need to pray and study more, and we need to pray for them more too.

p.s. : Our Lutheran Clergy also spend many years in Seminary, and serve a lengthy vicarage (internship).

Your friend in Christ,

Mark

I think part of the problem is when you ask a Catholic what religion they are they tend to say Catholic and not Christian. The Catholic means Christian when they say Catholic but the other person sometimes does not know that. The second thing is some Protestants do not believe Catholics are Christians. I personally question many Catholic doctrines but I do believe there are many Christians among you. Like any denomination though I think there are Catholics who are not Christians. They merely give Jesus lip service.

On a bit of a side note I thing the RCC brings a lot of the dislike upon itself. Things like the pope saying they are the only true church. Claiming they are the church Christ founded and basically no other church is legitimate. This is not the way to get people on your side.

For an example of what I mean just read Midge's response. A perfect example of why many Christians dislike Catholics. Many think just because they are Catholic they are better than all other Christians.

My pastor knows the Bible inside and out as well. He studies it heavily.

Yes, all the denominations you mentioned are Christians. The Catholic/Protestant thing is another subject.

Drake: if the "True Believers" are truly one body and one church, why the separate denominations? Why the differing doctrines and beliefs? You stated that they all follow the teachings of Jesus, which obviously means that Jesus only taught one way (not 30,000 ways), so why the different teachings from the different churches? Doesn't sound like one body to me.

A person who would ask you that question *might* just be completely ignorant; but if we give him the benefit if the doubt, there is another explanation: This person probably believes that the sacraments are a false gospel.

This is a widespread view among Protestants. They believe that salvation comes not through the sacraments, but through a personal choice to be a Christian (the "born-again experience"). And so to them, being both a born-again Christian and a sacramental Catholic is a contradiction in terms.

Luther,Calvin and Zwingli were all Christians. But not Carholics; they were Protestants.
There was a big conflict in 16th C on certain subjects between the above and the existing Catholic Church.
I am a Pelagian and so I think that the Pope is a rich bloke in a gown talking nonsense.
But I also think that an idiot religion like Catholicism is better for the lower classes than none.

If you read revelations ch 2-3 you will see the progression of the church. The Church in Ephesus signifies the initial church which lost its first love, the church in Smyrna was later when the church faced persecution from the Roman Empire, the Church Pergamos is a picture of how the church became worldly with Constantine making the state religion Christianity, and after that the church in thyatira signifies the Roman Catholic Church. Gods response to this was to raise up people to recover the truths, and this is how several denominations such as protestant, methodist, Lutheran....etc were formed. This is typified by the Church in Sardis. The Church in Philadelphia typified the recovered church which came started due to some brothers in England and others who worked on their shoulders. And the Church in Laodicia signifies some of the recovered churches which became degraded.

most religious people are insane and want to hate everyone they possibly can.

People from other denominations typically think catholics are not christian because of a lot of things... They worship idols, they worship mary, blah blah blah...

it is insanity.

Not to mention christian is a bad name for most people in the church, they are more like churcheans...they follow their churches doctrine and worship their church, they arent following christ or worshipping him, and if they did they wouldnt discriminate against a different denomination within their own religion.

If their cant even be peace within our own religion how can their be peace in the world??

There is a particular guy on here who answers every question by stating that the Catholic church is evil and false and on and on he goes every day, this type of ranting is indicative of the hypocritical mindset that has the nerve to proclaim love of Christ, the mind boggles sometimes Boo.

No, some don't. However, you can belong to a church, any church, and still not be a Christian. Christianity is much more than sacraments and buildings. Christianity is a personal relationship with God, through Christ Jesus' sacrifice - belonging to a church does not save you - acceptance of Christ Jesus' free gift of salvation does. Attending church or becoming a church member is a way to be closer to His people and to learn and grow in the faith.

Being a member of a religious organisation or baptised or a Bible reader or someone who prays, goes to church, believes in God - does not make you a Christian.
A Christian is a person who believes that Jesus Christ is God, that he resurrected from the dead (and is therefore alive today) and was born of a virgin (indicating his sinless nature).
