Pontius Pilate was the Roman representative for the civil government sent by Rome. When the Pharisees and Sadducees brought Christ before him he wanted to release him initially. To quell the uprising, he ordered Christ beaten (scourged) and when they brought him again and demanded his crucifixion then the crowd was stirred up by the religious leaders. Pilate then asked for a bowl and a jug of water. He washed his hands and symbolically he washed his hands of the blood of Christ. He indicated he allowed the religious leaders their will. I guess that is where the term "washing my hands of you" came from. He allowed the crucifixion though it was against the law for the religious leaders to condemn Christ to die. His part is crucial.

Pilate was the Roman procurator in charge of their affairs in Jerusalem and surrounding areas, basically he tried to release Jesus but he became cowardly when the Jews threatened to report him to Caesar, and so to save his position he had Jesus crucified, knowing all along that Jesus was innocent.
