I think 18 inches minimum. Some people don't believe in personal space while in the grocery checkout line, especially senior citizens. What do you think?

It depends on the situation and how crowded it is. In casual, non-crowded places, yes 18 inches is appropriate. Parties, bars, public transit, etc; it isn't possible. But, when it is possible, people need to back off.

I agree about grocery store lines. The line won't move faster if you are breathing down the person's neck, just because they are ahead of you! I don't want to smell someone's breath/perfume/personal smell, hear them breathe or feel their body heat.

This includes their cart too. If they aren't far enough away, they end up touching you or jamming their wheels into your feet. Not polite at all. Also, the person checking out may need to back up a few inches to reach the last things in their cart.

Any type of line, 18 inches minimum space, period. I have a technique to make people back up. I put one foot back, as if I were going to step back, but I don't. I casually lean in their direction. So now my foot is near their feet and I'm moving in on them. They almost always back up. Then I keep my foot back there, but my body forward, in order to maintain that space.

I agree with you. 18 inches unless it isn't possible; but in line it IS possible and people should respect that.

I agree. 18 inches to 2 feet. Minimum. I hate feeling hemmed in by someone who doesn't get it. My solution in the grocery store line is to always get a cart and never get in the "few items" line. People with carry baskets will be breathing down your neck. Carts at least give you space without humans in it--though you may well have a cart touching your rear. A step back every few minutes usually takes care of that.

This is entirely dependent upon culture and ethnic origins. For Americans, we tend to have a large personal space (upwards of 2 feet). For other cultures, such as India, the personal space for a face-to-face conversation, for instance can be within 6 inches. For Russia, it may be about a foot. For Britain, it's closer to 18 inches, and for China it's within 4-6 inches.

Susan S got it right - 24 inches. However, what gets to me is when I am loading my own bags into the cart and the person behind me (who is benefiting from this cause I am fast) pushes his cart up close to me so I have can't pay without backing him up. Then I just look at him and joke "Oh! Are you going to pay for my groceries?" Usually he backs up nicely then and there are no hard feelings.

I think 18 inches minimun is good. But shame on you for picking on our darling senior citizens. They do well to be able to go and get their groceries and checkout for themselves. I hope you are helpful! You know, no matter what you think now....... one day, that will be you.
........ I so hope, you find a friend.

I think it is at least 18 inches too. You are always going to have some disrespectful person in your personal space though. I think that is so ignorant.

the distance between the poles is dictated by the length of the flag....you want the flag to be free to fly in any dircetion without hitting anything....If one of the flags is a US flag then that pole should be hight then any other one....

There is no way you can put that down in numbers, I´d say. People have very different feelings about being "close" to each other and define "close" differently.

I certainly don´t measure it, but I´d say I usually keep about an arm´s length away from people I talk to if I don´t know them. By the way, it is not considered rude to try and step away from somebody who´s getting too close - if you can. :)

That depends... it seems white people are OK with 18 inches or less. As a black man the minimum is 36 inches or more.

Everyone is different. I have at least 24 inches between me and the next person. If someone steps in my space, I back up or say EXCUSE ME!
