I had a dream that I was doing plant research (but I am in nursing)?

Question

A few people who know me well tell me I should do research. I've thought yes, it suits my thorough personality best and but look how long it will take (another bachelors in science and then onto grad school in plant research or whatever)! I am in nursing. In my dream I was splicing and injecting a gene via bacteria vector into a plant. My dream was black and white.

Is this dream indicating that I am taking this idea seriously (at least more seriously than before)--as a real possibility?

Thanks for the input (insights) so far... No, it was for a best, well-decisioned, and good end. It was the right insertion, the right gene that was an intermediate step in creating a positive ultimate through some steps.

The dream does seem to be indicating only that you are considering this idea seriously. The plant is likely symbolic of your self, a growing, living thing. The gene being injected is, I would expect, the idea of research.

That you remember the dream as being in black and white is the basis on which I qualify your interest as "only" a consideration. Black and white photos and movies are obviously lacking in the colors one experiences in reality, hence they are abstractions, plays which are LIKE, but not reality. I'd suggest that the dream is a reflection of your consideration, but it does not reflect any projection of success or failure on the injection of the gene.

The foregoing suggestion of looking carefully at your aptitude and temperament to see if it is a worthwhile endeavor is a good one in my view.

I'd say it's a reasonable probablility. I'd suggest you take the Strong Interest Inventory, a standardized test for exploring occupations. It really opened my eyes when I took it.

By the way, do you really need a masters to do research in any field? Maybe it doesn't have to be hard science research--maybe social science or marketing research would work for you.

It's also possible the dream has nothing to do with vocation and it's about remaking yourself. Is there some change or addition to your life that you could pull off with surgical precision that would be healthy? (I'm assuming the injection is good for the plant) Injecting genes sounds like a powerful symbol for fundamental, life-altering change, like rewiring your DNA, which would potentially change all your behavior and how you relate to the world. If the gene is unhealthy or dangerous, then the message could be to leave well enough alone, or change your approach--maybe be less controlling or less clinical.

Another take is that the plant is your patient, and this is some kind of comment on how you should or should not handle your patients. If the gene is bad for the plant, this could be a symbolic transfer that would spare you the trauma of dreaming about injuring human patients.

Your dream was telling you you might be able to incorporate both nursing and plant research. Possibly in something like a pharmaceutical lab? It was a way for you to figure out how to use both things, bring them together, see?
