Like most people said change enough to get you started then change the rest in Thailand (on the streets gets you the best rate)
But here are the rest of the options:
1 Change all the money you think you will be spending in UK depending on how much the difference could be so little for such a hassle.
2 Use the ATM in Thailand - As long as your ATM card / Visa Cards have the network like CIRRUS or PLUS you can withdraw money directly from the ATM - Again the rates are not that great and there is a transaction fee per withdrawal (about £1 - £2). But if you dont wanna bring a lot of cash with you this is the best choice.
3 Change your money along the streets - Bring enough pounds or usd (by the way the USD gets better rates but if you have £ no point changing the USD then to thai baht as you will lose exchange difference on both counts) You can find money changers almost everywhere on the streets. One of the best rates I have gotten is along Sukhumvit Road near Soi 7 There is an indian commercial office there that does money exchange (Big gold colored shop with a sign at the top saying Money Exchange) another good place is at MBK some of the Goldsmiths there does money exchange at very good rates as well.
Have fun in Thailand

Exchange it in Thailand and you'll get a better rate at the Thai banks. However, for convenience you may want to get about 1000 baht while you're in the UK because the exchange booths at the airport do not have a good rate and you'll need enough baht to get you started (i.e., from the airport to your hotel).

Thailand, good rates at the airport, fair at the banks and better on the street. ATM card is the wisest option - Visa card works best.

1. NO! GBP 3k is too much to carry around. safes in the rooms cannot be trusted! 2. YES. Very much so. 3. Nowhere to hide your money in a hotel room. 4. Borrow on your credit card. That will get you a higher rate which more than offsets the ATM (150TBHT) charge and the accruing interest if your borrowing is more than, say, TBHT10,000-. 5. Straight from GPB to TBHT. But in the calculation only, the exchange rate is a composite of GBP/USD and USD/TBHT rates. 6. ADVICE: Limit the amount of the cash you carry around to the equivalent of TBHT10,000- or less whether in GBP or TBHT or USD. TBHT 10,000- will last you long in Thailand, and perhaps that is an amount, if stolen or lost, you can come to terms with yourself about.
