Is it possible to embed the font so that readers who do not have that font in their font folder do not end having wingdings or other weird characters instead of the proper text? If yes... how?

PDF will embed the fonts automatically. But in case of Microsoft word we have to carry the font everywhere along with the document. So pdf is recommended for maintaining the structure as well as the font of the document. Got it?

The best thing to to is to embed the font when creating a pdf. I'm taking it for granted that you have Adobe Acrobat. To make sure the fonts are embedded in the pdf, do this.

Open Acrobat Distiller (if you have Acrobat then you have distiller).

Click Settings in the menu bar and select Job Options from the drop-down list.

A new window should open. Click the Fonts tab.

Make your the Embed All Fonts check box is selected.

When you create a pdf, it will embed the fonts so you don't have to worry about other people having the fonts you used in Word to create the doc.

If you don't have Adobe Acrobat, there's a few free conversion tools you can use, try these, PDF Forge at:

If the readers do not have the fonts installed, they will see those weired characters. One way to prevent this is to save the document in graphic format. The readers will not be able to edit the document, but the document contains will be sure to display as it. PDF graphic format will be a better choice for this.

Options
Save
cl in the box to embed fonts

Of course you will have saved the file to the same version of Word as the recipient.
