hello, i have been looking at a car through ebay. i contacted the seller to find out more information about the car, since the listing has ended. while corresponding with him, he said that the transaction would take place through ebay, but is this possible since the item no longer has a valid listing. he was saying that ebay would act as a third party and hold the money while the car was transferred hands. and then upon my authorization the money would be released to the seller. is this a scam, or is it a legitimate deal. very confused, please help me. thanks

uh, noooooooooooooooo... if the listing is ended, he has to relist the item with a "buy it now" for you.
Ebay DOESN'T "hold" money for ANYONE. They just broker the deal and charge a fee.
RUN AWAY. NOW.

You don't actually buy cars through ebay. Here's how it works:
1. Find car you'd like.
2. Call/email seller and arrange a time where you can check the car out and test drive it.
3. Do that ^^^
4. If you like it, bid.
5. If you win, go to your bank and get a loan.
6. Pay the guy, take the car.

Do not go thru with it. Let it be re-listed on Ebay with a buy it now price, what you discussed with the seller. If you go thru something different, you could be scammed and nothing can be done, no protection thru Ebay or PayPal (if they accept it). Do not send cash, cashiers check if you win thru the auction. Be very careful, if you feel things are wrong, report it thru Ebay, do not fall for a scam and loose your hard earned money. Good Luck!!

It is most definitely a scam. eBay does not "broker" deals that aren't listed to be sold through their site. Do not send any more information or deal with this person. You should report them to eBay security.

Ebay will not provide that service, this is a common scam. Move on to another car.

Tell the owner - that you prefer a buy it now and then you will complete the deal.
Ask if you can put a paypal deposit and view the car - if you like =- you buy.
If you dont buy - the seller refunds 1/2 your money

I think it can be easily relisted, though I'm not sure if they do private auctions.
A while back they did do '2nd chance to buy' type sales, which I guess would cover this. Whatever you do don't fall for the escrow scams.
