scroll down to the financial aid part - then fill out their form or call. they don't charge to fill out the form:

this is info for single parents:

in terms of getting a computer free, i'm not sure about that but if you have craigslist in your area, try looking in the 'free' section as well as the 'computers' section. people often upgrade to new computers and give away their old ones (or sell them cheap), you could post an ad there as well saying you are looking for one.

Unfortunately, the grant for college comes after the semester begins because the Pell Grant goes to the college first. Any money left over goes to you in the form of a check. Go to the local community college and pick up the FAFSA form. It will provide you with the form needed to get a government grant if you qualify, and it is free to fill out. Also, the public library has a book listing scholarships. Good luck!

You first step would be to fill out the FAFSA. Go to FAFSA.org to get started. After filling out the FAFSA, you will know if you are eligible for grants (free money) and loans from the government. The FAFSA is always the first place where students start, because it is the best place to get free money and loans with low interest rates. Additionally, you don't start paying the loans off until 6 months after you finish (or leave) school. The form may take awhile to complete, but it is certainly worth it, especially since you have dependents which will raise the amount of money you can receive.
After you fill out the FAFSA and get accepted to a college, that college will also use the information off of your FAFSA to determine if you are eligible for any grants and loans from the school. Many schools may give students an extra 1,000 or 2,000 based off of their financial need. Finally, most financial aid counselors recommend going to fastweb.com to find additional grants and scholarships on your own.
As far as getting a computer....FAFSA calculates computer costs into something that is called your "Cost of Attendance." After receiving scholarships, grants, and loans, you should have more than enough to purchase a reasonably priced computer.

The website to apply for federal financial aid is
www.fafsa.ed.gov
If you are going to start school in January, you need to apply now, using your 06 tax returns. Yes, some schools will include the cost of a computer in your cost of attendance to go to school, but you need to qualify for enough aid to get that much. Some people qualify for enough of the free money, but some don't and have to take out a loan to finance the computer. Here is a good publication on federal fin aid and the types you can get. Email me if you have more questions.
Good luck.

Ditto Dawn....
Just a little advice...i am a single mother of 2 kids...and i work full time and attend classes online...when u get your tax check....use it 2 buy a computer...get a desktop from Dell...no more than $500...with u having a kid your tax money is at least $3000....single parents need to start saving that money for times like this...instead of shopping and buying things we dont need....dont mean to preach but just wait until January to start school and buy a computer than....we need to quit depending on other people and the government for assistance....Good Luck!

if you don't have a computer, how are you asking this question? Fishy, to say the least.
