How was your proposal done?

Our proposal was done separately of the party. My parents hosted a party at their home (I was the bride) to get the two families and close friends together to meet each other and celebrate the event. The tradition is that the bride's family hosts this party after the fiance asks for her father's permission to marry. Lots of couples now prefer to do the proposal privately, so today this party acts more as a formal announcement than an event to observe the proposal.

He proposed in a lakeside park, with the sidewalks covered in candles and roses at night-it was incredible...and he actually got ahold of our friends (even some of my friends from out of town he didn't know personally!), and surprised me with an engagement party for the next night, as well as setting up a breakfast on the following sunday for our two families to get together. He did so much work ahead of time-I was totally blown away. :)

My proposal was done in private on my birthday in a nice, beautiful hotel suite. It was private and still romantic. Since my cousin had already announced her engagement in December of last year and my birthday being in February of this year we decided to just tell everbody and set a dinner date where we can share and conversate with both our families. So I am getting ready now for my first Bridal Party Dinner. It will be a light dinner party requesting whoever we would like to be in our Bridal Party. But yes, you are supposed to have some type of engagement party for those of your family and friends who don't know and for those that do know it is requesting them to be in your Bridal Party.

nope, no engagement party. in fact, i don't know anyone who has had an engagement party. i think these are usually thrown by families with lots of extra money and large social networks. families of average income would be using the money for the actual wedding, reception, bridal shower, wedding dress, etc. having formal invitations and a party to announce that you are getting married seems excessive. the ring is announcement enough.

Nope, no engagement party, my husbands family never cared for me. Know how I know? Because everyone one before and after us has gotten the engagement party with excited people brimming about the upcoming wedding and marriage, just not us.

No, engagement parties are pretty rare where we live.
My husband proposed to me one evening when I was over at his apartment, and we were watching a movie.

I don't really cook much, but that night he asked me to make him dinner and I made him the easiest thing I could think of, boiled hotdogs haha. As I was in the kitchen not paying attention to him, he came up behind and wrapped his arms around me. He put his hand right in front of me and on his pinky was a diamond ring. When I turned around in his arms, he looked at me and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.

That's right - all that for hotdogs... I make an amazing hotdog :)

We did not have a party since we lived in Florida at the time and our families were in PA. We did call everyone as soon as it happen though.

No party. My husband surprised me when I was cleaning the bathroom. He told me he wanted to ask me something and I went into the living room and sat down. He got on one knee and asked the BIG question.
