The two answers before me are very good. Why not take one down and the other back?

This is my help from Washington, DC, United States of America

Here is what you do
When in Conn. follow the signs to NY Tapanzee Brige. (spelling). The Tap Bridge will bring you to Rockland County in New York State. Then you follow the road ways to the Garden State Parkway south in New Jersey. There are tolls on this road. Do you have ez pass, or take some change.
The take the Garden State Parkway south to the New Brunswick area of NJ and get on the NJ Turnpike also a toll road and that will take you south to your destination.

Ex NJ resident and made this trip many times.

Take I-84 through Connecticut and when you get to I-87 which is the NYS Thruway head south. Take that to I-287 south and follow that into Jersey, when you come up to I-95 which is exit 1A make sure you get on I-95 and don't keep following what was I-287 because you'll get on 440 and come back into Staten Island over the Outerbridge Crossing. After that head south on I-95 which at that point is also the New Jersey Turnpike.

Route 84 off the Mass Pike through Hartford into PA. Then in Scranton, PA go Route 81 directly into Maryland.

I'm going to second Calipso's advice.
Going Tappan Zee/ Garden State/ New Jersey Turnpike provides only momentary relief bc you can get stuck in heavy traffic SB on the NJTPK all the way to DC.
The NJTPK is also legendary for being one of the worst roads in America in bad weather
