Suicide rate is up 100% per year it seems and in 2006 there were 30 soldiers in Iraq which commited suicide.

The numbers in 2007 within the article were 27 and aiming to surpass last years numbers.

If anyone has any figures of how many soldier families have broken up would be appreciated.

No. Retired Army, statically the number are probably no different than what the Army has experienced since the end of the draft.

Pre-draft numbers were probably much higher.

I came in the Army in 1984. During my 20 years, I spent anywhere from 8-10 months out of the year gone or deployed. Family and other associated issues have always been a huge problem in the military.

Why ask a question if you have an Axe to grind and you're not willing to do research...

IMO, yes, extended tours are wearing a toll. I have a buddy of mine who's been known to go on patrol for a continuous 30 hours. That's dangerous, negligent and downright wrong. A happy soldier fights well and is fully aware, it's important we provide this opportunity for them to relax and not get overworked for morale's sake.

There was never enough troops in Iraq, to successfully occupy that country , American youth are no longer willing to serve their country, We need to bring the draft back,
to get enough troops in the field. No more college deferment ,they can finish their education after they finish fighting.

Conrange... The reason we lost the war in Vietnam is we were fighting a guerrilla war with conventional tactics, we had to win the war out right and the Viet Cong just needed to hold on and kill Americans ,until the people in America got tired of the war. They had their army underground ,right under the American troops.I live in Thailand part time and Thai have a little bag of sticky rice and live off the land. That is the same thing the Viet Cong Did.

In WWII,you were deployed "for the duration." period.
Some men were overseas for 2-3 years or more, continuously!. Don't talk about being "oushed too hard."
There isn't one soldier in uniform today who didn't volunteer. in WWII, you were drafted, period, and too bad!

There should be no "Tours" they should stay over there until the job is done, as was done in WW1 & WW2 (only after these wars,) and during the Korea Campaign the "Tour of Duty" started, through Vietnam and was one of the contributing factors in the losing of the Vietnam war. taken experienced combat soldiers out of the line and sending them home then having to retrain F.N.G.'s is a waste of experienced men.

Obvious question is yes. We are short of soldiers. Why else would we send them back for 3 or 4 tours in a war zone. One tour should be the norm.

Well... I don't see you volunteering to relieve the pressure... But aside from that what can be done is to excoriate those in office that give aid, comfort and encouragement to the enemy just to score points and hold on to their own power.
