Will I need a credit card to check into a hotel/motel in the US?

I'm not talking five star hotels. Planning on using mostly Comfort Inns or other similarly priced motels. Will the motel require a credit card when I check in, or do they still accept good old cash?

Credit or Debit card.

Not many, if any chain motels allow you pay straight cash these days. This is due to the people who pay cash for the room then run up phone bills or trash the room and walk out without paying the damage.
