Some Muslim woman say that the feel "safe" inside the burqa. If the man can't see you, he won't molest you, harass you, etc. I suppose. I grew up in the 1950's and I remember that a woman could not walk past any construction site without whistles and calls from the men. Women felt somewhere between frightened/threatened and uncomfortable. I suppose in Muslim countries, where gender "correctness" is not observed, the women WOULD feel safer hidden underneath clothing. I do not know if these comments about feeling safer are a rationalization or not, but I suppose it could indeed be so. And if the woman feels "safe" hidden away inside cloth, I suppose her man feels safe about other men not chasing after her or stealing her away too. I doubt if the burqa is work so that men will fall in love with the personality. The Middle Eastern men I know don't seem to care much about a woman's personality. This is consistent which a man's attitude towards women, in societies where women are oppressed. Women are useful for s*x, children, and keeping the home.

I'm sick of it, but only because I find it offensive that they should dress that way in such a free country. It does not display their freedom, but only lack of it. It irritates me that we have to walk on eggshells too as this is an appalling act in our culture. It irritates me that we are not allowed to say that we are irritated! Muslim's constantly get away with degrading our society and we cannot even make a comment expressing the obvious fact. They can blow us up and play the victim at the same time? I have no time for it anymore.

And if some people would like to think I'm racist, you don't actually know me and if you did, you would know that I'm not. So comment away and see if I care :-)

If you have an opinion on anything, you're automatically a racist. That makes me sick. I don't care what these women wear but I would detest it. It is a depressing look and I'm sure their husbands ( owners ) have demanded it. Talk about a sweaty life. Lordy, to each his own. Why does no one have a sense of humor anymore?

Turkey doesnt allow it, and thats a muslim country!,so i dont see why WE should have to put up with it..there is NO call for such extremism in the koran...simply to cover ones head/hair in an act of modesty,(so the poor weak-willed muslim man isnt tempted to rape you)????? why else????

me & most decent, honest hard-working people know that more than one terrorist has fled the Police, the UK & charges, by borrowing a hijab/burka
or whatever they want to call it.
& if we cast our minds back to the eve of the Afghanistan invasion we were freeing poor afghani women from wearing these garments.
that's the idea the government gave us, via the media & we backed the war on terror, without question.
why back the invasion of a country thousands of miles,
if women are going to made to walk around wearing them on the streets of the UK?
the only time your average brit woman wears a veil, is on her wedding day, one day & one day only.
we told it's cultural, not religious, so i can't see the problem & if they have nothing to hide, show their face.

You need to be mroe tolerant, for most muslim women its their choice, note i said most. Why they wear black is beyond me... i know lots of people who walk around like that and its becuase they cant find anything nice for hemselves to wear. I propse we start a campaign--- Birght burkas for all. and no, if everyone has one then the women wont be looked at in the street becuase they'll be just like everyone else

I have more important things to worry about than women wearing burqas. However, I will not communicate with or even acknowledge someone whose face I can't see.

I don't like the full niqab/burka ensemble (I find it looks sinister and I guess it goes against our culture where we value openness and being able to see someone's face when we talk to them).

But I respect their right to wear it as its a mark of the fact that the UK is a free country.

Yes. I do object. We are constantly being told that we must integrate. How can anyone get to know a pair of eyes peeping out of a slit in a black tent?
