I find the battle of the reilgous organisations for my belief and support condacending, are we all that gullable.
Or are we all that fragile that we all need to cling to our allotted beliefs, is it because we fear we may be evolved animals, and the ability to create religous belief makes us feel superior.
Our parents and teachers planted the virus of the belief of religon, because we trust them it is difficult to throw the creed from our system, were they only using it to help them control our behaviour, secular guilt, fear of missing out on eternal salvation.

Is it a huge cruel hoax

You've followed up a very simple minded question with quite possibly the truest thing I've ever read on these boards. You nailed the definition of this whole mess we call "beliefs" religion" "creed" etc. Because of this I'm lead to think that you're actually using this "question" as an outlet for a very valid and relevant point.

But, if you're actually interested in an answer to this question, it's no. A good friend of mine actually claimed there could be "atheistic Christians" non-believers of god that valued Christ's teachings. That to me was the silliest shlt I had ever heard.

In all reality you can call yourself whatever the hell you want while believing in whatever you want. Your beliefs could entail your false title. But you know what? Labeling yourself as an atheist isn't going to sign you up for anything. You don't have to shave your head, put on a robe. get tattoos, show up to a certain location weekly, or even wake up early on Sundays. You don't have to do a damn thing.

What should you do though? Find an ideology (or make one up) that brings you peace. If there isn't currently anything that brings you peace, try to find what brings you peace. I myself am an atheist but I don't prance around declaring that title, nor do I think life is meaningless. Hopefully for your sake peace will come sooner than later. Good luck.

atheist is a description only, a definition. It is not another type of religion anymore than not eating an egg is a diet.
All it means is that you do not believe in a God. It does not mean you believe in invisible pink unicorns.

Some that do not believe in Gods substitute ither thing to trust in. Things like Humanism.

I am quite comfortable with not having such belief systems, but you can use whatever you need to be comfortable with yourself.
Maybe the people who tried religion on you believed it and thought they were doing you good. In that case it might be an error and still not be a cruel hoax. Just a mistaken idea.

"atheist" MEANS not believing that there is a God, by definition... it's like saying you believe all the lights go out in your house at night but you don't believe it's dark inside.

You can call it whatever you want. You don't have to call yourself an Atheist. You can just say, "I don't believe in god." Nothing wrong with that.

you don't have to be an 'atheist'.... call yerself a 'realist' if you like.. you'll be attacked on that, as well.....

just because some of us don't buy into the organized religion of our parents , it doesn't mean we're bad people.... it just means we haven't been convinced by any ONE group that their way is right for us..... be it science or religion or peanutbutter lovers............

Not at all! Amazingly for Christians it is awfull to be an atheist. Atheists have no Bible of their own. They are open minded to anything that works!
Christianity is very dysfunctional!

Not so much a cruel hoax as a funny joke or a fun puzzle. Just be agnostic then the jokes on them.
