you can use soap and water, or sugar soap however its 50/50 how this is going to turn out as you are not re-painting and you can never guarantee that you wont wash some paint off the wall as emulsion is a water based paint, i can tell you now if you are too vigorous then you will do just this, i think you would be wise to repaint if your paint has been on the wall a long time, but give it a go and see what happens you may get away without repainting you may not

As emulsion is water based, the paint will come off with washing unless it's scrub resistant.

Sugar water - get it in B & Q for about £3. cleans the wall and gets the grease off well especially in the kitchen!

sugar soap is good, but if you want to paint but your mum likes the colour, you could take a sample to B&Q and they will mix it again for you, would that be a sufficient compromise for your mum. :-)

ther is a spray what do u call it its yellow with sugar in it carn't remember what u call it its real gud some one might know what u call it suger spray or summit washing up liquid is all so gud

ive heard alot of people use 'sugar soap' brought from your local diy shop.
never used it my self --- maybe thats why my walls look so bad.
