Do not use any flea products you can buy in the store on your cat or near your cat, even the ones that say they are safe for cats. They are not safe for cats at all. They are much too strong for their sensitive skin.

You need to get some Revolution or Frontline from your vet to treat you cat, and then keep cleaning your house frequently. Fleas can't live long without a host, so once you get them off your cat with treatment, they should eventually stop breeding and die off, but there is no overnight solution.

EDIT: Thanks for the additional details. Honestly, I think the cheapest and safest route for you and your family would be to hire a professional. You may be able to get some kind of special price, but in the long run, it will be the most effective and cheapest. With a baby, you will want to be very careful about what products you put around your house.

Until then, wash all bedding in the hottest temperature the fabric can take, vacuum/mop frequently (furniture and floors), wash clothes and hair frequently.

get an "advantage" flea treatment from the vet about £5, they'll need to know the cats weight, as different doses accommodates different sizes. Don't go for the cheaper brands as they wont work and are u/s, especially if you have an infestation apply to the back of the neck, and put a small amount at the base of the tail, especially if the cat has thick fur. i deal with household fleas by putting a cheap flea collar around the stub of the vacuum cleaner then fitting the bag over the top of it, this is because only the adult fleas live on the cat, the eggs larva and pupa (various stages of development in the fleas life cycle live-in your carpets and furniture) they then hatch out in the vacuum cleaner bag crawl out and re-infest your home again, this kills them off. the on line vet gives good advice for natural flea control. add Hi Mick, Did you know that just by using a combination of controlled humidity, temperature, and vacuuming, you should be able to eliminate fleas from your house? Even just using ONE of these techniques you should see a drastic lowering of the number of fleas in the house and on your pet. Fogs and bombs are no good - nothing from a store is, so don't waste your money. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.

Get a proper spray from a vets.

Yeah, fogging and bombing are the same thing. I think, if you put a cover over the fish tank where nothing can get into the water (like a big piece of plexi glass) your fish should be fine. You just need to be out of the house for a few hours. We used to bomb our house all the time when we had indoor/outdoor cats.

Yeah you need to fog your house. It is the most effective cheap way to get rid of fleas. Yes you need to remove your fish from the house because the toxins will get in the water and kill your fish.

There's Sargents flea powder. It says to sprinkle on pets bedding or floors for 2 hours..but when I had a flea problem cuz of My dog, I left it on the floor all day.(about 6 hours)..then just vacuumed it up and havent had a problem since..and using the powder theres no need to remove fish or any other pets.

theyre both the same thing, but they arent always 100% effective...trust me lol..... best thing to do is call the council and they will fumigate your house (which kills everything and is 100% effective) if you are working, this may cost you, however it is free if youre not. good luck! :)
P.S. if you're buying stuff from the pet shop, you're wasting your time.. brands such as bob martin-which are cheap too- are not effective whatsoever. waste of money and time.. any vet will tell you this. go to your council. its the best option. fleas can carry disease, which can be passed onto humans.

I've read all kinds of articles stating to use sevin dust (I use this in my yard and it works well, not expensive at all and you can get it at any lawn and garden or hardware store), sprinkle it on the carpets like your would some carpet fresh, and vacuum, you could give this a try.
