I have two very special family photographs, that are irreplabable.

Unfortunately, both are out of focus.

Is there a FREE downloadable software programme that can help me improve the focus?

You'll find plenty of graphic software on the net.But it should be kept in mind that, you can improve upon the focus by using the "Unsharp" filter available in the softwares. But since your photographs in original are out of focus, any amount of sharpening them by filters will not ipso facto correct this abnormality.Anyway just try and see if you like the results.I would recommend you to get Photoshop and you will find this filter under filters category. You can also use PhotoImpact or Corel Photopaint etc.Best of luck.

There isn't really any free program to fix out of focus images. The success you get from using a program will depend on how out of focus your images are. If they are very out of focus then nothing much will help.
I've found SizeFixer from www.fixerlabs.com helps. It isn't free but it does a good job. SizeFixer is actually for making images bigger but if you leave the size settings at 100% it will still alter focus/sharpening. They have a free trial and the home version of SizeFixer costs just under £30.

I dont think so.

You may have to pay to get them into focus.
