If the HPI states that it has been written off,the log book should be stamped.
Also the car should have had a vic check.
You need to check if the name on the log book is the same as the seller if so ask the seller who repaired it and what was wrong with it(ask for pictures before repair).
If the sellers name is on the log book and they knowingly sold it without telling you about the history, i think your best form of approach is to ask your local C A B if they have broken the law & if so where do you stand legerly. get proper advice not peoples opinions good luck.

Not a lot you can do really. Did you not have it HPI checked when you bought it? I think if you are prepared to pay you can get a more detailed report on this. Did you buy it from a garage? If so, I'd get the report then go after them. If you bought it as a private sale though, you have no redress on the seller at all. Sorry :(

As you say there is no indication as to what wrote off the car from the insurance point of view. Sometimes the insurers will write off a car because the coat of repair, for example paint, costs more that about 80% of the residual value. You need to find out why the car was written off before panicking too much. I presume that it has an MOT so you could go to the garage that MOTed it and see what they say.
