Sorry i'll try and explain the point of my question.
How come it's so acceptable to talk and to pray to god but the second someone comes forward and says "God told me to do (such and such)" they're labled crazy... Can't have it both ways.. either praying to god is also crazy or god telling people things is normal.

Actually usually when god talks to people they're more likely to be put on medication to stop it then thrown in a mental institution (anti-psychotic medication has really come a long way).

But anyway, if all the people who prayed were put into the loony bin there wouldn't be all that many people around to run our civilisation. Not to mention a lot of the people who should be in the mental asylums happen to be government.

God talks to people all the time, but one has to read the signs. There are consequences to every action we do. God speaks to us, through these consequences, and if you sharpen your sensitivity to the spiritual side of life though prayer/meditation, you might develope a good intuition, so that God can speak to you a little better, and warn you with gut feelings, when you are in danger morally or physically.

We don't get dragged off anywhere. The only time we run into trouble is when it's not God talking and we run wild hurting others because we say it was God who told us to do so. This is not something God would say to us. God wants us to love others unconditionally, not go postal. Besides you're not gonna get anywhere by being sarcastic. It's not helpful at all, the only thing it does is give people the ammunition to say that all Atheists attack Christians and all the other ugly things that are being said about one another.

Because god tells us that our spirits are free, in society we are not free it requires us to conform and be like we are told is normal and any body who acts different is dragged off for reprogramming. Thousands of years ago the babelings of people who claimed to hear god where written down as the word of god. In this day and age many people don't understand the spiritual nature of things.

Michael - it depends on what we think god has said to us. Lots of people who talk to god believe they get answers, help with problems, guidance and the like and get great comfort from that.

Its when people start thinking that god has told them to kill, lie, steal, or something like that that there is a question as to where the person would be safest.

And please, no haha's - this actually was a fairly good question.

We just want God to listen to us, of course we don't want God to say something that isn't extremely vague and open to our interpretation.

You do not know and understand what you are telling. May God balaess you and forgive you of your sins.

that is because of the bias of your listeners when you tell them God has spoken to you....

actually, despite the temporal consequences, having God speak to you is a rare blessing.
