Firstly, it wasn't Christians that arrested/tried Galileo, but Catholics used civil governments to do their dirty work. Catholics do not follow the doctrines of Christ or the Apostles, and therefore are not Christians. The Catholic Church killed just about anyone it wanted who didn't believe what they told them to believe.
And it was for what Galileo suggested, that the earth circled the sun and not vise-versa -- not whether or not is was a sphere -- that got him in trouble (though some say it was simply because he wouldn't cow-tow to Catholic dogma).

Keep in mind one thing: The Church is not Christianity. I'm not saying that the Church didn't and doesn't contain Christians, because it obviously does. But the head of the Church is Christ. Christ is Christianity.
The Church did commit atrocities in the past, that's true. It can't be denied. But with Galileo, the truth is pretty complicated.
I would recommend reading the Wikipedia article on it for a start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo
My personal interpretation of the Scriptures mentioned (the ones that were once interpreted as advocating a "fixed" Earth) were actually referring to the invisible axis. The Earth IS actually "fixed" on this axis, and follows a somewhat set course.
No, the Bible was never changed. The thing to keep in mind, however, is that the first people who interpreted the Bible didn't have the material we now have on the Hebrew language. And Hebrew is tricky; they have one word that has several meanings (both connotative and annotative), and one word in English might have ten different words in Hebrew that describe it.
And the Earth was actually "discovered" to have been round or spherical far prior to Galileo.

A) Galileo was tried and convicted of attempting to destroy the Church as the spiritual leaders of humanity. At least that's what the leaders at the time thought he was doing. Like people in power everywhere and everywhen, any threat to that power is dealt with harshly, but they had to have a "policitcally correct" reason for shutting him up. And the "flat earth" junk was handy. Believe me, they knew the earth was a sphere. Ptolemy had proved it more than 1400 years earlier and the records were in the Church's hands well before Galileo's time. (Where do you think HE got the idea of checking it out via his shiny new telescope?)
B) No, the Chruch did NOT kill people for telling others that the earth was a sphere.
C) Catholics put the Bible books together and declared them to be the inspired word of God back in the 4th century AD. Martin Luther dumped 6 of the Old Testament books and parts of 2 others because those books contained stuff that flatly contradicted what HE was telling folks. That power trip thing again. So, in a sense, yes the Bible was edited. But NOT by Holy Mother Church. By Protestants who took advantage of the fact that most of the populace was functionally illiterate and would accept ANY rendition simply because they had no way to ascertain its completeness. But the Catholic Church STILL prints their original set of choices in its totality. The Protestants finally had to put those missing books back, but they weaselworded it by calling them "apocrypha". SHAME on them! And they say Catholics are the ones messing with it! HUMMMMPH!

the bible truth has always been there , for those who actually bother to read it. It was not edited. People just did not read what it said then.
The bible was in the hands of a few leaders. The printing press was not created until the 1600's so the common person never had a chance to read anything the bible said until then. Also, it was not until about 200 years later that the bible was put in the common language so the average person could read it for themselves. So at the time of Galileo, only the leaders of the catholic church had the bible, and they obviously did not read the contents.
the catholic church extracted what it was interested in for the 52 liturgies a year (which get recycled every year) and ignored everything else.
therefore, Galileo was criticized because of ignorance of science and the scriptures.

You are confusing Christianity with the Catholics... which profess to be Christians but in many respects are hardly such. They initiated the Crusades as well as the Inquisitions where many innocent people and true Christians were tortured and murdered.
Galileo's great sin was not discovering that the planets and earth orbited the sun, but that he interpeted scripture better than the Pope did, which to Catholics is the unpardonable sin... nobody is supposed to interpret scripture better than their idol can.
2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

In a sense Christian governments like Bush is still killing people because they say that a stem cell is a human being. They do it to prevent the enlightment and advance of science in finding cures for our ailments... What the Holy Roman Catholic Church did to Galileo, Bush and Christian Fundamentalists are doing to medical researchers today.

The bible didn't say the earth is a sphere. It said it was a circle. Circles are flat geometrically. The bible also says the earth has four corners, indicating a flat surface. Thus the contradiction; Is it a circle or does it have corners?

I believe no matter how the Bible is analyzed, it is flawed When one controls the religion of a people, they then control those people. This is why it was so important to make sure the Bible only told the stories approved of by the King and his Church. It also explains the hiding of certain texts. If anything written even smells a little bit against the King, it was stricken and removed. Strictly discussing only the New Testament, it was written two centuries after Christ was murdered. This was long before translators made the Bible readable for the masses. They had complete discretion over content. Before being released to the masses If a story wasn’t complete, multiple stories were woven together to form one book. Pieces were moved around and put together like a puzzle. When a turn of a phrase disagreed with the King’s Church, it was, as previously mentioned removed in its entirety. We now know that multiple scrolls of material, intended to be included as part of the Bible, were carefully hidden instead. This was necessary to avoid destruction of both the authors, and the information. We are aware of this as scripted Codices, have slowly been discovered. They’ve been carbon dated and authenticated by experts to prove they were written at approximately the same time the Bible. Numerous experts believe these writings were intended to be part of the original Bible. However, it is also true to say that these compositions are still the cause of great debate. Before the Bible was let loose to commoners, these powerful people had just simply raped it. of freedom for the common man, it must be destroyed. For if it was found that the King was not god, the King could loose his ability to control his kingdom. As the translators were loyal to the King, the Bible was edited very carefully indeed. Speaking only of the New Testament, the Bible remains one of the very best set of life instructions known to man. There is only one, most important law. It is: To love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might, and to love thy neighbor as you love yourself. If this Law is followed to the letter, it isn’t possible to break even one of the old Ten Commandments. This is how we can live more abundantly, which is as God wants us to live. When Jesus was born, all prophecies from the Old Testament were fulfilled. The Old Testament passed away with the first coming of the Christ. The Ten Commandments were no longer relevant.
Blessed Be

Diligence in the affairs of salvation, and to be examples to the world.
We must be diligent in the use of all the means which lead to our salvation, persevering therein to the end. With great care, lest, with all our advantages, we should come short. Work out your salvation, for it is God who worketh in you. This encourages us to do our utmost, because our labour shall not be in vain: we must still depend on the grace of God. The working of God's grace in us, is to quicken and engage our endeavours. God's good-will to us, is the cause of his good work in
us. Do your duty without murmurings. Do it, and do not find fault with it. Mind your work, and do not quarrel with it. By peaceableness; give no just occasion of offence. The children of God should differ from the sons of men. The more perverse others are, the more careful we should be to keep ourselves blameless and harmless. The doctrine and example of consistent believers will enlighten others, and direct their way to Christ and holiness, even as the light-house warns mariners to avoid
rocks, and directs their course into the harbour. Let us try thus to shine. The gospel is the word of life, it makes known to us eternal life through Jesus Christ. Running, denotes earnestness and vigour, continual pressing forward; labouring, denotes constancy, and close application. It is the will of God that believers should be much in rejoicing; and those who are so happy as to have good ministers, have great reason to rejoice with them. (Php
